The Way Forward<br />
The global trend <strong>in</strong> average surface temperature<br />
is upwards <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> pace at which<br />
it is mov<strong>in</strong>g is fast. While <strong>the</strong>re are still<br />
uncerta<strong>in</strong>ties surround<strong>in</strong>g future projections<br />
<strong>an</strong>d possible impacts, <strong>the</strong> evidence<br />
po<strong>in</strong>ts to unprecedented <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>, with<br />
potentially dire consequences. Because <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>herent vulnerabilities, <strong>the</strong>re is a lot<br />
at stake for <strong>UKOTs</strong> .<br />
There is no quick fix to <strong>the</strong> climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong><br />
problem <strong>an</strong>d no s<strong>in</strong>gle policy will set us on<br />
<strong>the</strong> right path. No s<strong>in</strong>gle country or group<br />

What c<strong>an</strong><br />
<strong>UKOTs</strong> do<br />
about climate<br />
<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>?<br />
The way<br />
forward<br />
problem. This global issue requires <strong>an</strong><br />
agreement between nations <strong>of</strong> all sizes<br />
<strong>an</strong>d at all stages <strong>of</strong> development. It<br />
requires a commitment to jo<strong>in</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
action by governments, <strong>the</strong> private<br />
sector, communities, civil society, households<br />
<strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>dividuals. It requires social,<br />
economic, environmental, <strong>an</strong>d cultural<br />
policies <strong>an</strong>d actions. It requires vision <strong>an</strong>d<br />
creativity.<br />
5.1 What does this me<strong>an</strong><br />
for <strong>UKOTs</strong>?<br />
• Action. No country has <strong>the</strong> luxury <strong>of</strong><br />
wait<strong>in</strong>g to see how <strong>the</strong> climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong><br />
challenge will play out, least <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>UKOTs</strong>, where m<strong>an</strong>y ecosystems are<br />
among those that have already been<br />
identified as most vulnerable to climate<br />
<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> <strong>an</strong>d have begun to experience<br />
adverse effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>an</strong> unstable climate.<br />
• M<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>an</strong>d protection <strong>of</strong><br />
ecosystems. Look<strong>in</strong>g after biodiversity<br />
<strong>an</strong>d critical ecosystems helps ensure<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y carry out <strong>the</strong>ir ecological functions<br />
<strong>an</strong>d services as well as <strong>in</strong>crease<br />
resist<strong>an</strong>ce to climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>.<br />
• <strong>Climate</strong>-pro<strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>g national policies<br />
<strong>an</strong>d development. <strong>Climate</strong> <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong><br />
has to become a long-term strategic<br />
issue for <strong>UKOTs</strong> that is factored <strong>in</strong>to<br />
decision <strong>an</strong>d policymak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> all<br />
spheres, from water resource m<strong>an</strong>agement<br />
to physical pl<strong>an</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to agriculture<br />
