Friends and Comrades!
It is a privilege and an honour to deliver this lecture to mark 50 Years of New Beacon Books.
I aim to do two things: to reflect upon the many political and cultural institutions and movements that inspired
its formation, as well as the political and cultural movements that it spawned and to share some thoughts as to
why New Beacon is arguably even more relevant and necessary now as we approach the third decade of the
millennium than it has been in the last five decades.
