MEDOC AND HAUT MEDOC
Located on the Left Bank of the Gironde, these two appellations cover approximately 60km of its
length. Its southern edge borders the city of Bordeaux, encompassing fifteen communes exclusive
to the appellation. The soils in Haut-Médoc and Médoc are not as well draining as in the communes
above and the wines are not as deep, long lived or concentrated as in the smaller, more famous
appellations. However, there are excellent estates producing very complex and fine wines, with
the most celebrated examples being La Lagune and Château Camensac. There are no estates from
the 1855 classification within these two AOCs but several top producers of the Cru Bourgeois
classification are found here.
