It is heldin such high regard, its wines so readily exalted, that “DRC” has become a byword for exclusivityand supreme quality. It is no surprise that prices for the domaine’s wines are stratospheric – andcontinue to rise – as collectors seek out bottles that are made in tiny quantities. All of DRC’sholdings are in grand cru vineyards, two of which – La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche – are“monopoles”. Below are the most sought-after wines from DRC’s stellar range of eight grands crus.LA ROMANÉE-CONTIThe jewel in the crown of any wine collection, La Romanée-Conti isalso the most expensive wine in the world. The fact that the domaineis named after this vineyard – the only estate in Burgundy that is legallyallowed to do so – indicates the significance of this fabled plot of land.Robert Parker proclaims that “the startlingly perfumed, kaleidoscopicallycomplex, supremely elegant Romanée-Conti truly exhibits a categoricaldifference from any other wines on earth.”LA TÂCHEDRC’s second monopole vineyard, the status of La Tâche is almost aslegendary as La Romanée-Conti. Stylistically, it tends to be the moreflamboyant of the two wines: exotic, rich and complex. This is partly dueto the range of terroirs that the 6-hectare vineyard encompasses, withpebbly limestone at the top of the slope and a higher proportion of clayat the bottom. A truly remarkable wine.RICHEBOURGRichebourg is an 8-hectare grand cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, ofwhich DRC owns almost half (with the remainder split between ten otherowners). The vineyard lies on the same part of the slope as La Romanée-Conti, and thus the two share a similar terroir. Richebourg is a full-bodied,muscular and structured wine, earning a reputation as one of Burgundy’stop grand cru vineyards.RIVIERA WINE BURGUNDYGRANDS-ÉCHÉZEAUXYet another of Vosne-Romanée’s grand cru vineyards, Grands-Échézeauxis often overshadowed by the more famous wines in the DRC lineup.However, it is a magnificent wine in its own right. The vineyard is roughlyone-third the size of its neighbour, Échézeaux, and is generally consideredto yield higher quality wine that is full-bodied, deep and concentrated.This is a wine that should not be overlooked.
