Cape MX Tracks Revival
The Cape has a bevvy of historic local MX and
enduro tracks which fell into disuse or the areas
where they were previously located has been
developed and built over.
But all is not lost ... groups of passionate bike riders
are working together to bring some of these local
tracks back to life.
Malmesbury had a very popular and well-supported
MX track which, back in the day, also hosted
some regional and National MX events. Sadly the
location of the original track, which was conceived
and the development of which was driven by
Hennie Theron, is no longer available to be ridden
due to biological and botanical interests. Jannie
Terblanche, whose family was involved with the
original track, is in the process of developing a new
track just 5km outside the town to the north on the
N7. Being a passionate rider himself and knowing
that the Cape riders are not that familiar with hardpack
as found upcountry, he decided to set a track
that would give local riders a place to practice the
skills needed when competing around the country.
The new track has a very Glen Helen feel with its
massive drops and climbs, ready for any aspiring
rider to up his riding skills.

The track at Lemoenskop – a farm outside
Caledon - started as the tip site for excess earth
from the mall development in the town but soon
the rider boys in the area saw the possibility of
using the mounds to create an MX track. A small
enduro track had been laid out previously on the
property and this was just an offshoot from there.
A successful riding day was held at the track on 18
September to raise funds for the track completion
and get it to official race condition. Although the
National riders were away contesting their rankings
in Pretoria, a crowd of Cape and local enthusiasts
were there to kick up dust and have fun – all in the
spirit of two wheeled competition.
