The Kalahari Rally 20<strong>21</strong><br />
Just saying the words “ Kalahari Rally”<br />
creates a mind storm of swirling red sands,<br />
dunes, rippling golden grass, heat, thorns<br />
and the sounds of high-performance engines<br />
revving freely in unleashed pursuit of that<br />
elusive goal, victory!<br />
Add copious amounts of blood, sweat, tears, days of mindboggling<br />
effort, intense concentration, difficult navigation,<br />
late nights, early star-scattered freezing mornings, and you’re<br />
getting close to creating the fuller picture of what rally is all<br />
about! It’s the stuff we all dream about, fuelled by years of<br />
lusting after a Dakar experience as we watch it on television<br />
with the world’s best duelling it out in some far-away country.<br />
Now its closer to home, and quite achievable by any reasonable<br />
rider. At the prize giving the ASO regional rep for Dakar, Daryl<br />
Curtis, told the assembled contestants that after Dakar, the<br />
Kalahari Rally was the next best and toughest rally in the world.<br />
That’s huge! Its ours, right here for the entering, the Dakar<br />
Dream realisable for us mere mortals!! Daryl knows, having<br />
been through the Dakar experience himself as a top rider on<br />
many occasions.<br />
Garth Roberts and his incredible team have now brought us<br />
three events over the last four years, each getting better than<br />
the year before as the accumulated experience is gathered and<br />
refined. So next year is going to ratchet up even a few more<br />
notches, stand by and start getting ready.
