Pics by: Extreme Memories Captured Entrants this year covered Auto, SXS, Buggy and Moto, with teams like Red- Lined Motorsport and Penta/ Red- Lined Motorsport fielding their screaming v8’s, their sound track being complemented by that Terminator look-alike, the Century Racing CR5 seven-litre Chevvy V8 that breathed fire, shook the ground as it passed, and sent Kalahari squirrels diving for cover! I watched the Volkswagen Amarok driven by Hennie de Klerk and Adriaan Roets howling across Mier pan in full chat at 185kph to the finish of the Special Stage, a sound like no other! There was a SXS team from Angola, together with a bunch of other local manne, and then there were the bikes! The bikes are what really move me the most, with rally being the final frontier of hardcore two-wheeled motorsport. Rally on a bike separates the men from the wannabe’s – the riders duel it out through some of the toughest terrain the country has to offer, flat out, while all the while also having to read the “tulips” on the roadbook in front of them, remembering to scroll forward as they hurtle through the bush, over the rocks, through kilometres of thick and soft, hot sand, an yet still remain on the invisible track. This aint easy, yet somehow the top boys do it at a speed that makes the eyes water! This ability to navigate under these conditions turns up a few surprises every year, as one can only ride as fast as one knows where one is going. So each event there emerge a few guys who rate much better than their age or riding ability would suggest, due to their ability to nav without getting lost! So even if you might think that you are not able to compete with the fast boys in offroad or enduro, rally presents the opportunity to level that playing field substantially, so start thinking about making an entry in 2022 if you have half a mind to get involved. The Kalahari Rally is now an official Road to Dakar qualifier, and thus the competition was hot for the first spot that would give the winner this fantastic step-up towards a Dakar entry. Charan Moore from Lesotho and John Kelly from Botswana slugged it out for the lead, and by the conclusion of stage 2 Charan had established a commanding lead, but was dealt a cruel blow when his motor dropped a valve later on in the rally. However, this is racing, and when I spoke to him in the Rietfontein bivouac, he accepted it ruefully in good spirit. John eventually went on to triumph overall and win the Road to Dakar prize, boosting his entry hopes for the 2022 Dakar substantially.
We did something completely different this year at the KR, and took along twenty-five adventure bike riders in their newly formed Adventure Raid class The vision behind this category was to allow prospective future full-race entrants to have a window to look through at what rally consists of in all its aspects, while not having to incur the cost nor complexity of building a road-book equipped racer. They were classified as full entrants to the rally, sharing in all the responsibilities and benefits of the KR, with the exception of being non-competitive entrants who rode on a gps route following in the main the liaison stages and not being timed. The guys had a great deal of fun over the seven riding days that took them from Mafeking at the start deep into the red dune country at Rietfontein and Mier on the Namibian border and back. A very special option to be considered by any adventure rider wanting to up their sand riding skills in particular. BOTSWANA BOY JOHN KELLY.
