In life there is always how you remember things and then there
is how they are. What I remembered as a fairly easy pass from
the GS Eco days turned out to be a deep orange ordeal. I think I
might be exaggerating a bit, because the group made it through
without serious mishap. Or I might not be exaggerating. After
two hours of riding we had done exactly 4.2 kilometres of which
the first two was the road getting to the pass. We were behind
schedule.
It was a busy morning with lines to be determined, momentum
calculated and bravery gathered. The one obstacle after the other
tested person, (there were female riders), and machine to the
limit. When we eventually stopped at Sumatra, where the farm
road runs into the provincial road, there were only smiles. The
group had achieved the unthinkable and rode a trail they never
believed they could. Beginners were riding like champions and
the more experienced discovered tricks they never knew they
had.
Because of the time it took, we had to change plans slightly. We
took a shorter route to Verjaarsdag Dam, named after the many
Verjaarsdag parties the farmers have there, for a welcome rest
stop. The water crossing before the turnoff made for spectacular
pictures.
A slow ride then took us to the surprise for the day; the ploughed
field to practice your sand riding skills, with the farmer permission
and blessing of course. Ploughed fields are perfect for this.
It’s loose enough for you to get used to the movement of the
bike in slow motion and challenging enough to test your bravery.
Only momentum will get you through.
It’s the most fun you can have on a bike with your clothes on.
Not a single biker missed out. There were mishaps, but they
happened at slow speed with no injury to person and machine.
My nephew learned the hard way that feathering your clutch in
sand is not a good idea. He destroyed his clutch and had to ride
the demo Yamaha T7 for much of the rest of the trip. Not too bad
a punishment for a stupid mistake.
