SEPTEMBER IN CLOCOLAN Words & Pics: Coetzee Zietsman When you try to organise a bike trip during a Covid pandemic, you have to approach it with a sense of humor. Lockdown makes us believe that little is known about the world out there. We are sometimes not even sure if there is a wide world out there … somewhere. And thus our “September in Clocolan” trip came about. We needed to re-establish a link with the world. Jason Killian of Modderbok Adventures and I took our Covid fears by the horns and planned a trip to Clocolan in the middle of the winter. The President interfered with our plans when he locked the country down and our “Chill in Clocolan” trip became the “September in Clocolan” trip. The Eastern Free State and in particular the little town of Clocolan, hosted two BMW GS Eco events in 2012 and 2013. I had the privilege to scout and build the routes for those events, so Clocolan was an easy choice. With the country going through a Covid recession, we knew the trip had to be as affordable as possible. St Augustine’s in the enclave of Modderpoort between Clocolan and Ladybrand offered nice rooms, with breakfast and dinner included, at an affordable rate. They can accommodate 120 people. We were 17 in total including the backup crew. We left Johannesburg early morning September the 3rd with 14 bikes; a mix between BMW, Yamaha, KTM and Honda and made our way to the Vegkop memorial just outside Heilbron. From there we took backroads, all dirt, to Lindley for a petrol stop. For those of you who have never been on these roads, they are highly recommended. They were perfect to ease us into the trip. There are stretches where you can open up, sandy patches and lots of loose gravel. What more can you ask for? This is also where the first debate of the trip broke out. Exactly how much should you deflate your tyres? I have had this debate many times over the years and have come to the conclusion that there is no right answer. I deflate the front to 1.7 bar and run the back at 1.8. Some don’t deflate at all and the rest are caught in the middle. In my not so humble opinion, not deflating is a great way to challenge your skills in an environment which is not safe at all. We had a newbie with us, so we travelled at a steady pace without making it too fast. Before we knew it we were in Lindley for a fuel stop. They say most bike accidents happen in parking lots and I now believe them. Natalie, our newbie, handled the dirt with aplomb and then managed a spill on the forecourt. She broke her wrist. We concluded that Natalie rides dirt well, but still needs some practice with filling up.
