OTIS INDIA AWARDED CONTRACT IN MUMBAI Otis India was awarded a contract to supply and install equipment in the 75-meter-high Capital office building in Mumbai. The installation of the equipment will start in February 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by mid 2011. The equipment includes 20 Gen2 ® elevators with ReGen drives, including 16 units equipped with Compass destination-management systems, in addition to six escalators. The Compass system delivers personalized elevator service to help improve lobby traffic flow, while integrating a security interfacing for elevator dispatching. The elevator’s regenerative drives recapture electrical energy that would otherwise be wasted and returns it to the building’s power grid for reuse. The building also features other energy-efficient technologies, including specially glazed windows to help control the building’s temperature and a rainwater recycling system. One of the most distinct features of the building is part of its exterior shape, which looks like an egg. The egg features an LED screen, which provides interior shading without blocking any natural light or views to the outdoors. During the day, the exterior acts as a mirror, reflecting the surrounding cityscape, while at night, the LED lights are illuminated like a television, providing news and business information. 8 ELEVATOR WORLD India • 4th Quarter 2010 • Divekar BOY LOSES HAND IN ELEVATOR ACCIDENT In August, The Times of India reported on an accident in which a 14-year-old boy lost his hand attempting to open the grille door of an elevator in Mankhurd. According to the report, the boy reached through the door with a badminton racquet in an attempt to punch the dooropen button on the stalled elevator, but instead pushed the button for the fifth floor. This caused the elevator to rise with his hand trapped in the door. He was taken to the hospital, but in the rush to get him to treatment, his severed hand was not retrieved in time to be reattached. The boy and his family had moved to the apartment building in which the incident occurred after losing their home as a result of a road-widening project in Sewri. A public interest litigation on elevator safety has been filed. TRAINING COURSE ON LIFTS The Maharashtra government held a training course on Lifts – Maintenance and Repairs on October 15. Varsha Divekar, sectional electrical engineer from the Maharashtra public-works department (who is also a statutory lift inspector for the state) delivered a four-hour lecture, which was attended by 35 engineers from across Maharashtra.
