Pilgrims and other visitors will be able to ride elevators to a balcony located just below the clock faces, from which they will be able to view the Grand Mosque and other sights of the city. The clock faces are each 46 meters in diameter, which is more than six times the diameter of Big Ben clock in London. They will be more than 400 meters above ground level. The clocks began operating in August at the start of Ramadan. A four-level astronomical observatory and Islamic museum will also be located in the clock tower. The seven-tower complex was designed by architect Dar Al-Handasah of Shair & Partners. The Saudi Binladen Group is developing the project. Construction began in 2004 and is expected to be completed in 2011. SAUDI ARAMCO HOSTS SAFETY EVENT Saudi Aramco, a major oil company, will host a safety event on December 4-5 at its DOC Building in Al Khobari. The conference will examine the relationship the oil industry has with safety, policy and mechanisms it employs and what heavy lift manufacturers must do to meet their guidelines. The conference will also give attendees the opportunity to learn how Saudi Aramco operates. South Korea THYSSENKRUPP INSTALLS TWIN ELEVATORS IN HOSPITAL ThyssenKrupp Elevator announced in July that it will install two of its TWIN elevators (systems with two cabs running independently in the same shaft) and one conventional elevator at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon. The installation is a part of a modernization project. After the replacement of three traditional single elevators that have reached their capacity limits, five cabs will be available, allowing more passengers to be transported in the same amount of space. In addition, a destination-control system will shorten passenger wait times. Ajou University Hospital is one of the largest in the country. KESI took charge in celebrating the anniversary and boosting the lift industry in July when it launched the Lift 100th Anniversary Committee and started preparing memorial events involving the inspection agency, five companies, three industry organizations under the Korea Elevator Industry Coop and the Korea Lift College. The five companies involved are Hyundai Elevator, Otis, ThyssenKrupp, Mitsubishi Electric and Schindler. Under its president, Nam-Deuk Kim, KESI is hosting the expo on December 15-18 at Hall C with Coex in Seoul. The organizer expects more than 20,000 students and representatives from industry organizations, universities and lift companies to participate in the expo. A history center will display 100 years of Korean lift history and information on the lift industry to which people may not have easy access. The Safety Experience center is designed to acknowledge the safety issues and elevate the ability to deal with dangerous situations. The companies participating in the expo will each have a promotion booth to introduce new technologies, future vision and their businesses to expo attendees. Visitors can also experience technologies related to the lift industry such as closed-circuit television, security, light and fire extinguisher technologies. HYUNDAI ELEVATOR RECEIVES ENERGY CERTIFICATES Hyundai Elevator Co. Ltd. announced in August that it received the “A” class energy-efficiency certificate of VDI 4707 certified by the German institute TÜV. The energyefficiency class was introduced by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and is classified in seven grades, from A to G. Class A represents the least consumption of energy after evaluating service hours, energy consumption during operation and average travel distance. Hyundai explained that the acquisition of the certificate is derived from its regenerative inverter LOWATT, which can increase efficiency up to 77.5% by returning its regenerated energy during elevator operation to a building’s lighting and climate-control system. Hyundai’s LOWATT was also awarded the New Excellent Technology certificate from the Ministry of Science & Technology by removing its electrolytic condenser, thus reducing its size and extending its lifespan.
Turkey ASANSÖR ISTANBUL ADDS HALL AND CHANGES DATES To acquire the use of a fifth hall, the organizers of Asansör Istanbul 2011 have changed the dates of the 12th international lift fair to April 14-17, 2011. The addition of Hall 6 to its traditional group of Halls 7, 8, 9 and 10 is expected to bring the net exhibition space to 11,000 square meters. Hall 6 was not available for the previously announced dates. The changes are designed to accommodate an expected increase in national and international participation. Thousands of international fair visitors from New Zealand to the U.S. are anticipated, with as many as 64 countries represented. United Arab Emirates TL JONES SUPPLIES TELEPHONE SYSTEMS TO FERRARI WORLD In August, TL Jones announced it had supplied emergency elevator telephone systems to the Ferrari World theme park on Yas island in Abu Dhabi. The Memcom telephone systems were installed on Otis elevators throughout the complex. The project was managed by Laith Hasen, general manager of TL Jones U.A.E. He leads the TL Jones Middle East operation from Dubai. The Memcom emergency telephone system allows connection with up to four pre-programmed telephone numbers in the event of an elevator-trapping emergency and is EN81 compliant. Ferrari World Ferrari World was developed by Aldar Properties. The Ferrari-themed amusement park is located adjacent to the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
