Serum Institute of India by Fali D. Palkhivala The Serum Institute of India was founded in 1966 with the aim to manufacture life-saving immunobiologicals, which were a shortage in India and being imported at high prices. The institute has since established itself as one of the world’s largest producers and reliable sources of high-quality vaccines and biologicals. The products have been supplied to international health agencies like the World Health Organization, United Nations Children’s Fund and Pan American Health Organization, in addition to more than 140 countries. The institute recently set up Serum Bio Pharma Park in Pune. The park is adjoined to the Serum Institute’s existing manufacturing unit and is meant for biotechnology and pharmaceutical products. This has encouraged many foreign companies to partner with the institute. One of the more recent partnerships is with Concord Elevator Pvt. Ltd., which supplied custom designed passenger and freight elevators for the buildings at India’s Biotech Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Serum Bio Pharma Park. D.J. Concord Elevator worked closely with Serum Institute Consulting Architect Professor Percy Pithawala to conceptualize and design the elevator interiors. The cabins of the passenger elevators are large with internal dimensions of 1.8 m wide, 1.5 m deep and 2.8 m high. They have been enhanced with custom etched titanium, gold-plated, stainless-steel panels and a titanium, gold-plated, mirror-finished, stainless-steel false ceiling. The flooring is a seamless two-tone marble achieved by using water-jet cutting technology. The operating fixtures include the car operating panel and the hall operating panel, comprised of titanium, gold-plated, stainless-steel, self-illuminating LED micro push buttons custom marked to the required floor designation with Braille and dotmatrix direction and floor- indication displays. The same trend of space, texture and design is continued with the large door openings, which measure 1.2 m wide and 2.4 m high, including the custom etched-titanium, gold-plated stainless steel on the cabin door panels and all seven landing-door panels of the elevator. All door panels have been provided with vision panels of “toughened safety glass” to avoid breakage and conform to 29
