Editor’s Overview The Tie That Binds This issue of ELEVATOR WORLD India contains numerous reports and articles on many aspects of the elevator industry. In a letter to the editor, Trevor Rodericks expresses his concern about the number of elevator accidents that have been occurring throughout India. He expresses the need for the industry to take steps to eliminate these unfortunate incidents. Aggressive elevator and escalator maintenance programs are suggested, along with the implementation of public-safety awareness programs such as the one offered by the recently established Elevator Escalator Safety Trust (EEST). Numerous opportunities are available to get involved with this effort and those who would like do so in India can contact the EEST at website: www.eest.in. To set up a similar program outside of India, you can contact the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation in the U.S. at website: www.eesf.org. Additionally, the report in this issue on the recent presentation that Otis Elevator Co. made to grade-school children is a fine example of how you can bring this important safety program to your area of the world. Articles on the latest advancements in hydraulic ele - vator technology that describe energy-efficient systems now available are also presented in this issue. Property owners and their consultants should become familiar with and understand this technology so they can specify this type of equipment for their new elevator installation and modernization projects. This will ensure that they are getting state-of-the-art, energy-efficient elevators in their buildings, thereby doing their part to not only protect the environment, but also provide a sustainable future for all. These articles will help elevator equipment owners better understand the important aspects of the equipment that they are buying from our industry and putting into service in the buildings.
