anticipated outside building temperature variations,
causing the building cooling to flow out of
the building at the ground. Therefore, it was
decided to provide each elevator hoistway top
with a sprinkler head that is responsive to heat
and smoke. The elevator machine rooms have
similar sprinklers and are equipped with shunt
trip devices that prevent the sprinklers from being
energized, until electrical power is removed from
the hoist machines.
The Next Generation
of Super-Tall Buildings
. . . and the beat goes on:
◆ The 1-kilometer-tall Nakheel Harbour and
Tower planned for Dubai has been cancelled.
◆ The 1-kilometer-tall Kingdom Tower, presently
being planned for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is in
the design stage and is slowly progressing.
The 1-mile-high, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed
Tower planned for Chicago is still “pie in the sky.”
Note:
The two observatory lifts at 10 mps, up and
down, are not the world’s fastest, despite the
Wikipedia report that they have a speed of 18
mps. The current cost to travel on these lifts to
the 124th observatory level is now US$27 per
person with a reservation and US$108 without;
maximum permitted stay is 90 minutes!

latest crop of 100+ story towers. He graduated from California
State Polytechnic College in 1967 with a B.S. Degree in Industrial
Technology and obtained his M.B.A. from the University of Denver
in 1989. He has written extensively on all aspects of elevator
designs, applications and technological changes and has had numerous
articles published on these subjects.
