Doing My Happy Dance
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
The older we get, the crankier some of us
become. Add to that the whining, complaining
and sharing of medical horror stories and every
little inconvenience becomes a major event.
Some have reasons and some don’t.
What’s so funny about the whole routine is that we have endless
conversations about our issues, big and small. No one objects to
hearing and sometimes one of us yells “I win” as one story tops the
other.
But what do you do when you’re happy?
When the time comes that you’ve moved on from sadness and loss,
the light shines brighter and life is just better. New people come along,
new bonds are formed and things seem to stabilize.
I have no idea how annoying I sound to my friends when I tell them
how happy I am these days.
Some friends never know what to do with “happy!” There’s nothing
to talk about.
All the aches and pains are still there, and the doctor visits go on, but
I really don’t dwell on anything. They’re no longer the center of my
world. I limp or take an extra moment to get my hip to work but it’s
kind of 2nd nature now.
At a time in our history when we witness so much devastation and
suffering, I appreciate more than ever how tranquil my life really is. I
have a lovely roof over my head, food when I want it, precious pets, and
all the necessities to be comfortable… and the ability to make choices
for myself.
We take our comfort for granted most of the time, so for today, I
celebrate where I am. If my arthritis decides to act up more than
normal, get the heating pad and shut up.
The same is true for the old lady that stares at me from the mirror.
It doesn’t matter.
Every time I ask my dogs if they want dinner, they dance around the
kitchen wagging tails and knocking each other over. Now I dance the
happy dance with them!
