Notes for OSCAR LAFAYETTE THORP:
Oscar was a trustee for the Pleasant Plains School 1918 - 1919. Later he served on the Panhandle School Board.
Oscar L. Thorp was Sheriff and Tax Collector of Carson County from January 1, 1923 to December 31, 1930. He
was elected to four terms of this office. This term of office spaned the time during the hectic oil boom years. On
December 22, 1926 he purchased a 1925 Essex Coach that has 18 h. p. from J. N. Hodges of White Deer.
He belonged to the El Paso Consistory and the Khiva Temple of the Mystic Shrine of Amarillo. He was a Charted
Member of Carson Lodge No. 1167 of Masonic Order. He was Worshipful Master for the fisical year 1927 -
1928. This Lodge was in charge of graveside rites,
Oscar was a leader in the Carson County area. On January 8, 1929 he was elected director of the Panhandle
National Farm Association. He was president from 1930 through Novenber 4, 1944. The Panhandle Farm Loan
Association became the Panhandle Claude National Farm Loan Association Febryary 19, 1944. He headed this
new association for a few months after it was formed.
