Little Bethel Church<br />

"Little Bethel Church" was constituted in Union County, Kentucky, September 14, 1820, with nine members,<br />

viz: William Hammack, Jeremiah Collins, Asher Cox, Charles Buck, Elder, W.C. Buck, Peggy Young, Sarah<br />

Collins, Elizabeth Young and Christopher Young. Presbytery, John Flynn, Help, Henry Morris, James Berry and<br />

Burgess S. Moody.<br />

The first meeting after constitution was held at the home of Elder W.C. Buck on Tuesday, September 26,<br />

1820. Elder Buck was Moderator, and was chosen pastor of the church. Delegates were chosen to meet with the<br />

Highland Association. The brethren having no house to meet in, met at private houses until September, 1821,<br />

when they removed to a house they had erected in June 1821. This year messingers were chosen to meet with<br />

Highland Association. In November, 1823, help was appointed by request, to aid the constitution of a church at<br />

morganfield. September, 1825 Brother Collins was then ordained deacon and Brother James McMahan assistant.<br />

September 1830, the church was ten years old, and numbered nineteen members. The church met very regurlarly,<br />

but gave very little information as to the business tranactions. March, 1834, Brother John D. Davis was ordained<br />

deacon by Brother William Morrison. September, 1835, the Highland Association, having just closed her last<br />

session at the church, passed a resolution and gave the church some advice, which this church considered not in<br />

accordance with the word of God, and could not receive it; and at her next meeting, in October following,<br />

excluded John D. Davis and eight members for not adhering to the rules of the church.<br />

November, 1835, James W. Collins and E.G. Collins were chosen deacons in the place of the two excluded.<br />

September, 1836, the church withdrew from the Highland Association for calling in question and nullifing her<br />

acts. May, 1837, she called Elder R. Jones to preach for her. August, 1837, Brother James W. Collins was<br />

licensed to preach. In October, 1835, the church held a meeting, was much received and had about thirty-five<br />

additions. June, 1838, the church declared herself in favor of missions. January, 1839, Brother J.W. Harpold was<br />

licensed to preach. In 1840, the church now twenty years old, numbered fifty-six members. At her meeting in<br />

January she dismissed eighteen members to constitute a church at Caseyville. April, 1840 James W. Collins was<br />

ordained Elder and John Withers was chosen Deacon. May, 1840, Elder James W. Collins was chosen pastor. In<br />

1841, J. Withers was licensed to preach. In 1842 he was ordained to the ministry, by Elder W. Morrison, J. Bourd<br />

and J.E. Grace. In 1842 he was chosen Pastor. In 1848 James W. Collins was chosen Deacon. The church at that<br />

time agreed to build a new house of worship. In 1850, the church, now thirty years old, numbered seventy-three<br />

members.<br />

That is the last entry concerning James W. Collins, his death date is not given but is thought to be around 1853.<br />

JOHN * 2 , JOHN * 1 ) was born May 09, 1821 in Kershaw County, South Carolina, and died March 15, 1887 in<br />

<strong>Mississippi</strong>. He married PENELOPE ANN MCCLENDON, daughter of DENNIS MCCLENDON. She was born March<br />

25, 1828 in South Carolina.<br />
