In 1818 John Collins bought public land in Cotaco (later renamed Morgan Co.) Alabama. He purchased the land
at the Huntsville Land Office: S.W. tract, section 6, Township B, Range SW, containing 159 acres. Also
certificate #5009, Sept 1818, he purchased an additional 160 acres. The first Tavern License in the area was
issued to John Collins in 1818. In the "History of Morgan Co., Ala.," by Thomas Knox, he states that in 1818
there was only 386 white males over 21 in the area. John Collins also served as Justice of the Peace, and was a
road surveyor on several road projects. 1837 John Collins borrowed $200 to buy additional land, which he is now
selling to Rather, and Rather agrees to allow Collins to remain in quiet peaceable possession of the property and
enjoy the benefit thereof.
In the Jefferson County, Tennessee Court Order Book, 1820, "John Collins Power of Attorney to George Branner
Sept 14, 1820. Known all men by these presence that whereas Edward Collins late of Orange County State of
Virginia deceased by his last will and testament in writing bearing date of the (blank) bid give and bequeath unto
me John Collins of Jefferson County and State of Tenn. a legacy. And of the said will made and constituted Lewis
Collins and George Morris joint executors as in and by the said will may appear and I the said John Collins have
made, ordained, constituted and appointed George Branner of the County of Jefferson my true and lawful attorney
for me and in my name, and for my own proper use, to act, demand, and receive of and from the said Lewis
Collins and George Morris executors as aforesaid the legacy given unto me the said John Collins by the said will
of the said will of the said Edward Collins deceased and upon receipt thereof by or payment thereof to my said
attorney a general release or discharge for the same to make, execute, or deliver, etc, etc. In witness whereof I
have hereunto set my hand and seal the 10th day of April 1820. Signed John Collins in presence of John Ropher
and Angus McKay".
John Collins was in Morgan County Ala., in 1818. Whether or not he had moved his family down at that time is
not known. It is always possible that John returned to Tennessee to give this power of attorney to George Branner,
or returned to move his family to Alabama. John Collins had a son named Lewis Dillard Collins who was the
executor of the will of Edward Collins in Orange County, Va. Edward mentions a son, John Collins, in his will
