Having a Selective Memory
When you get to a
certain age like I have, it’s
acceptable but not really
comforting to know that
you’re not the only one
who has a problem with
remembering names—
including your own
relatives and friends. It’s
particularly frustrating
too, when as a newspaper
correspondent, I can’t
remember the name of
the person whose picture I’ve just taken
when I should. I wish I could say that
the problem started only recently, but
it didn’t. I know for a fact that mine
started back in high school (1959-61)
when I couldn’t remember the name of
a schoolmate during summer vacation
when my mother asked me who she
was.
As an avid player of the board and
now online word game Scrabble, I’ve
become a regular user of the dictionary
to confirm my spelling. I thought my
decent into spelling mania was a recent
problem, but I found out recently that it
just isn’t so. These days of computers,
though, the problem of correct spelling
is being solved somewhat by the spell
check programming—unless, of course,
there are two spellings for a word like
neighbor and neighbour.
This year, as a longtime poet and short
story writer since my early schooldays,
I made a resolution to go through my
old school files to look for ideas for new
short stories, etc. To be honest, English

composition was my
best subject, though not
the grammar part. I had
happily saved my English
literature books, but
didn’t realize how much
of my composition work
I had also saved until I
started looking through
the old files. I’ve always
remembered getting
an A on a descriptive
paragraph, and
enjoying participating
in spelling bees. (Don’t get me started
on history class, as curiously it was my
worst subject, with thankfully no notes
left now to prove it.)
Imagine my surprise and delight
when I started going through my files
and found more than one composition
marked with an A. Along the way I’d
noticed that my spelling then was not
as perfect as I remembered it being.
Imagine my surprise too to find a note
from my English teacher confirming it.
Her note read:
Dorothy, (as I was known then and
still am, but only when necessary) I
think your poems and stories are quite
good and show much imagination and
invention. You should continue to do
much reading and writing.

With proofreading a seemingly
lost art now, even with the advent of
computers, at least I’m not alone in
this too.
