Drawn to Water
From my local walks in the
neighbourhood to trips within Southern
Ontario, I see how a similar pattern has
emerged. I am drawn to water. I also
see how this area is blessed with an
abundance of water.
Water is one of the elements and is
associated with the direction of West
and the zodiac signs of Pisces, Cancer
and Scorpio. The Moon and Venus are
also associated with Water as is the
Goddess and the season of autumn.
Some of the magical properties of water
are purification, intuition, dreams,
rebirth or renewal, understanding and
harmony.
For me, I may plan my morning walk
to pass by the nearby Thames River.
Depending on recent precipitation
amounts and type, I may find the water
flowing gently or foaming as she rushes
past. These conditions may evoke a
sense of calm or invigorating energy
and inspiration. Other times I may be
in awe of the power of water or the
peacefulness after a fresh snowfall.
Walking and cycling routes have also
been built along the river so her path
may be followed through the city.

shores are home to such towns as
Goderich, Bayfield, Port Elgin and
Southampton to the North and Port
Dover, Port Bruce, Port Burwell and Port
Stanley to the South, to name just a few.
Many take only an hour or two to reach.
All beckon us to come visit.
Beaches, as well as walkways built
along these lakes, invite us to enjoy the
sun and water or cycle and walk the
paths. As in my hometown, I find I am
once again drawn to the water’s edge
when visiting these locales for the beauty
and the therapeutic effect of water.
In addition to being situated on
the water, these lakeside towns host
a plethora of eateries and
unique shops to tease and
tantalize.
Some of my favourite stops
are Shaw’s Ice Cream on the
way back from a day trip
to Port Stanley. A drive into
or out of Goderich usually
means a stop at Culbert’s
Bakery where a wealth of
delicious treats make the
decision to pick just a few,

most always means a delicious meal at
the Corner View Café with a view of Lake
Erie. I seem also to be drawn to food!
A September trip to Port Elgin found
me sitting on the beach reading one
morning. The moon was still visible
in the Western sky. A yogi had set up
her mat on the beach and was working
through her routine as walkers passed
by. One lady and I commented to each
other how peaceful it was on the quiet
beach with the sun shining and the
waves lapping our troubles away.
So whether I am on my morning
walk in the neighbourhood or in need of
some Daytripping, I am sure my choice
of destination will once again show how
I am drawn to the healing element of
water and the places located there.
