VolunteeringMid andSouth Canterbury,inpartnership with Community House, will be honouring thesetwo occasions with ajoint project aimed at getting people into the spirit of kindness. Between8.30am and 4.45pmpeoplewill have the opportunitytopop into Community Housewhere theycan jointhe celebrations by writing aletter or card with messages of encouragement, sharing good wishes, orajoke etc. Allthe stationarywill be provided. Thecards and letters will then be passed on to to those who need theirday brightened up thosewho may be older, lonely or unwell. If business or schools want to do their own cards or letters, theyare most welcome to anddrop them off to Volunteering Mid &South Canterbury office at Community House. RandomAct of Kindness Day first originated in 1995 in Denver, Colorado and in 2004, spreadtoNew Zealand. The idea behind this celebrationisto makethe world alittlebrighterand better throughlittle and simple kind gestures, words, and actions. World LetterWritingDay wasstarted by Richard Simpkin in 2014asatribute to the joy and excitement he feltwhen a handwritten notewouldappear in his letterbox. Carolyn BondHood, Dianne Thomas, Moana Taylor andGabrielleThompson are organisingthe ball at Trott’s Garden Marquee, RacecourseRoad, Ashburton on October29from7.30pm. Carolyn said it was the third ball to be heldbythe group, sincestarting in 2016; theyare heldevery twoyears. However thepastevent, plannedfor last Septemberand theninApril,was cancelledtwice due to covid. Carolyn said that would not happen this yearthere was definitelygoing to be a ball. The ball,firstheldin2016,was agreat chancetoget dressed up and indulgeinan eveningoffun for acausewith funds raised spent locally,supporting people with cancer, she said. As well as the balls,the group havealso organised aHigh Tea occasion and in total raised morethan $70,000 for the Mid Canterbury CancerSociety andcancer research.

The facility offersarange of community organisations space andsupporttobase their operations and has become a centralpoint of contact for Mid Canterbury since it started in 1995. It currently has 22 permanent, and more than 20 parttime organisations as tenants. But there is awaiting list of organisationsstillseeking tenancy space. Trustees of Community House MidCanterbury Charitable Trust say it is working to acquirethe adjoining property of Smith Seeds, along Moore Street. ‘‘The BoardofCommunity House have been gratefulfor theopportunity to purchase this site as Smith Seeds themselves, preparefor a moveto larger premises at the AshburtonBusinessEstate.’’ ‘‘Working alongside of the business owner, Community House have again engaged with community funders to make this purchase possible by early2023. ‘‘A number of grant applicationsare being made. The funders’recognitionof whatCommunity House offers, enables us to better caterfor local needs,locally. ‘‘In partthe success of community house has been because locals can access and meet providers facetoface,’’ they say. If the purchase of the adjoiningproperty goes ahead Community House willbeable to provideoffice space to those on the waiting list, and also provide more space for Safer Mid Canterbury. Theywill solely occupythe new adjoining property. ‘‘Expanding community house meansagrowthinthe number anddiversity of community servicesthatcan be accessedinone place, strengthening the collaborative natureof what is already afantastic community hub foreveryone acrossthe district of Mid Canterbury.’’ Community House Mid Canterburywas originally startedin1995byMay Greensladeasaresource centre fornongovernment agencies to provideahubfor social service groups in Ashburton. It has continued to growand demandfor such aservice hubwarranted the appointmentofafull time manager in 2002; prior to this itwas coordinated by agroup of volunteers. In late 2015 Community House MidCanterbury Charitable Trust acquiredits current building and following afullrenovation andrefit wasofficially opened in April at itsCass Street location bythen Rangitata MP andMinistry forthe Community and Volunteer sector,Jo Goodhew. ‘‘Thepurchaseand fitout wasmade possible by generousfunding fromlocal government and organisations as well as a number of individuals.’’ In ayearaffected by covid, over 100different organisationsused Community House’sfacilities to operate their administrationoroffer their services.
