The council will grantGeraldineEndowment LandFund money to the centre in atwo-part deal. The centre will build apublic walking track in its 22-hectare eco-lodge grounds in exchange for $145,000 from the fund. And Peel Forest Road buildings, sold to the centre by the councilin2008, willbesold backtothe council for $68,000 from the fundand retirement of an outstanding $42,000loan. PFOC isaregistered charitable trust that runs outdoorskillstraining,outdoor recreation and education programmes and provides education for sustainability.The centres website states its mission as providing adventurous outdoor activities designed to empower, educate and inspireyoung peoplein achallenging and safe environment and its vision to make a difference to peoples lives through direct experience with the outdoors. The centres team of qualified instructors are highly trained and are dedicated to ensuringyou haveaqualityoutdoorexperience, high on adventure, fun, education and truly memorable. We have many yearsofexperience and are proven leaders in our field. Wehave apassion for the environment in which we work andare committedtoproviding outdoor environmental programmes that challenge andinspire people. (peelforestoutdoors.org.nz) Peel Forest Outdoor Pursuits Charitable Trust chairNicky Donkerssaysthe arrangement willenable the centre to step up and take on the next stage of its life. For outdoor education students, therell be littleperceptible change. Centre manager Tim Shaw says, The ethos willcontinue. Raftingand kayaking (flat and whitewater), bushcraft, rock climbing, abseiling, winter alpine, high ropes, leadership, and teambuilding skills will remain PFOC staples, along with Grade2kayakcertification,Duke of Edinburgh practice and qualifying journeys and underlying real-life challenge. Jeff Powley, centre finance manager and Peel Forestresident, says, Its about experiencing challenge rather thantalkingabout challenge. Tim adds, I dont know how to quantify that, but its huge. He says,Ouruniqueness is that everything we do is tailored to the client. We work with all age groups and time frames, and we tailor ahuge range of activitiestosuitclientsneeds, such as schools,clubs, andother not-for-profit groups. The council deal followsearlier governance shifts and will enable financial sustainability. Nicky says the new-look board, which has a greaterskill set andagreater focusonstrategic direction,set the stage.Jeffsays,The biggest change willbethatitopensthe way to hopefully securing astrategic partner. In turn, such an arrangement will allow more than just arobust balance sheet. Jeff says, Thecentre will be able to offeropportunities for programmes for those who otherwise wouldnt be able toafford it. From the publics perspective, the most overt shift at PFOC will be the addition of the all-comers walking track, which Tim says will be wide and accessible and may link with other nearby trails.
