Gloriavale
ReviewedbyRowenaHart
Gloriavale is aChristian Communityhidden away in
aremotevalley on the West Coast.
It was founded by independent preacher Neville
Cooper (also known asHopeful Christian). Birth
control is not permitted, and in the early 21st
century the community was home to some 550
people, manyofwhom had names such as Willing,
Ready and Faithful.
This documentaryshows thatall is not well.
We meet Sharon Ready who has lived and worked
there for 50 years. She has about 12 children and
60 grandchildren. Her son John left Gloriavale
claiming that the women there were treated as
slaves. Sharon’s daughter and kids also left saying
thereisalso widespread abuse.
They are all talking to the legal system inaneffort
to save themselves and their community from the
all powerful leaders.
Unfortunately they arefinding it almost impossible
to help.
Achilling story, and right here inNZ. At the end
of the movie we all sat stunned and one by one
started discussing the awful situation. At least the
storyhas been told.
will also be used on seats thatwill double
as movable bollards.
Councillor Angus McKayquestioned
why they wereusing TimaruBluestone
rather than locally sourced stone.
CouncillorLeen Braam pointed out the
localstone is not suitable for seating
saying the bluestone is the bestproduct to
use forthe functions required, ‘‘you can
cut it, it is easytosit on, the stoneswe’ve
got here in the rivers are not easy to cut...
it’snice as boulders, but not to sit on.’’
For the planting scheme, Mr Bellamy
said the current gardens have plenty of
colour in spring and summer but not
much in winter, so the new gardens will
introducemore colour through all
seasons.
BaringSquare will be splitinto seven
garden spaces, existing gardenbeds will
remain. Other sections willbemade up of
perennial sun and shade plants, aformal
garden in the centre,streetscape garden
adjacenttothe new civic building,annual
border on the EastStside andthe lawn.
Nativetussockand grasses willbeused
in 50 percent of existing and new
perennial gardens.
The formal garden willfeature a
variety of plantsincluding
Azaleas, Lavender,Hyrdaneas
and Winter Rose.Wherever
possible the plants willbesourced
locally.
Relocation of the Boer War
Memorial to Baring Square West
requires resource consent and
heritage advice and is yet to be
signedoff.
All councillors apartfrom John
Falloon and Angus Mckay voted to
approve The Baring Square East
landscape plan.
