The relocationofthe Boer War Memorial to Baring Square West has also been proposed. Landscape architect Ben Bellamy, of RoughMilne Mitchell Landscape Architects, presented theirplan to councillors. The roadbetween the square and new civic building will be one way, running north to south off Cameron Street, with angled car parkingonthe west side. Mayor Neil Browncommented that the road has yet to be properly named. Pavingthat bridges the space between the square and the new civic building will be the same pavingstonesused in the CBD upgrade. The diagonalpaths in the square will havenew concretelaid and bluestone paving will replacethe current clay pavingaroundthe central grassarea. It was founded by independent preacher Neville Cooper (also known asHopeful Christian). Other sections willbemade up of perennial sun and shade plants, aformal garden in the centre,streetscape garden adjacenttothe new civic building,annual border on the EastStside andthe lawn. Nativetussockand grasses willbeused in 50 percent of existing and new perennial gardens. The formal garden willfeature a variety of plantsincluding Azaleas, Lavender,Hyrdaneas and Winter Rose.Wherever possible the plants willbesourced locally. Relocation of the Boer War Memorial to Baring Square West requires resource consent and heritage advice and is yet to be signedoff. The one bedroom property, which is achurch hall not a house, is listed for tender with Ray White Ashburton. People’s warden Trish Robertson said the building had become surplus to requirements, and of late had been used by others in the community such as Allenton School, other educators and organisations. ‘‘It is no longer being used as church and on September 11 we are doing adededication of it,’’ she said. The service, at 2pm, will remove its consecration as a church. It was open to the public, with anyone welcome to attend. Vicar’s warden Roger Paterson said the building was purpose built by the church back in the late 1950s. It was one of two similar churches opened at the time. It was built in 1958 or 1959, he said, of St Peter’s. ‘‘The church built it. The site is a199m2 building, on a869 m2 corner section, and features alarge hall room with big windows and original wooden floors. It has aseparate room opening to the hall with bifold doors, and two smaller rooms used as offices and store rooms, as well as aporch. Tenders to be lodged with Ray White Ashburton by September 14, 2022 at 2pm. BRIEFS RATES EXTENSION Ashburtonrate payers have an extension to their rates paymentsthis quarter. Due to sickness at the delivery contractor DXMail,council was advised they are behind standard delivery timeframes affectingrate payers. Councillors agreed to delay the latepayment penalty to allow residents who received their invoice late the same timeframe in which they would usually have to make the rates payment.The new datefor payments is September 5, instead of August 20. MARKETPLANS The Ashburton Event Centre willtake abreak from holding the Merry Little Christmas Market thisyear. It was a decision made earlier in the thick of covid restrictions. The break from the well supported event has given organisers timeto look at ways to revamp it, make it morefamily orientatedaswell as creating events within the market.
