This old totara has seen afew people come and go
as it sits on Geraldines main street. Itmarks the site
of the first house in Geraldine (1854) and may well have
been planted over the placenta ofSamuel Hewlings
and Nga Heis daughter Catherine (Kate).
On Monday, Geraldine said farewell to one of its
identities who died aweek ago, having been taken
ill at the RSA and then admitted toTimaru hospital.
Trevor Patterson was awell-known and loved figure
who wassometime member of both bowling and golf
clubs, and astalwartofStMaryschurch and the RSA.
He would also call us at GNews very promptly if his
copy of thispaper wasnot delivered on time. Agentle
soul, he had his place inour community, which was
as well, as one fears that he would not have done so
well in alarge city. We shall miss him.
With the passing of Marjorie Dow née Nelson, an
eraisslipping away as we lose touchwith atimewhen
kids travelled to school on horseand cart.Aswetake
her funeral here inGeraldine, our thoughts are also
with the family of Tony Kircher who will be holding a
funeral for him in Timaru at the same time. He died
far too young. Geraldine is avillage and we share
each others sorrows as well as joys. Our sympathy
with all who mourn. Haere engā mate, haere kite
Taking time to enjoy the sunshine
GNews happened across Roger Harper
lastSaturday as he enjoyed acup of coffee
in the sun. He was on his wayhome from
aspininhis 1966Chevrolet.Hesays that
he is feeling great and enjoying the little
things in life, like coffee, sunshine and
driving. In March, he was in the hospice
and expected to die imminentlyofa rare
and aggressive Merkel Cell Carcinoma.
After sixtreatments with an immunotherapy
drug called pembrolizumab, he is painfree
Success inthe snow for students
Seven Geraldine High School students
Roger says that if he hadmelanoma, a
related cancer,treatment would beatthe
taxpayers expense, but his is not. The
original estimatewas $10,000 atreatment.
AGivealittle page with a$70,000 target
was started(GNews 24.03.22). $75,703
was raised in short order.
People were very generous, anditwas
all budgeted out. Thenthe doctorsdoubled
the dose, so instead of a$10,000 bill, it
is now $17,000 asession. Ive got to find
another $20,000 from somewhere. Ive
tumours, four of which were the size of
