Arelatively new Geraldine Womens
Division 1team steered themselves into
the HockeySouth CanterburyChampionship
grand final, played out last Saturday at
the TrustAoraki turf in Timaru. Despite
losing 6-4tothe Cambridge team, player
Julia Boothroyd says, The game was an
end-to-end hockey game filled with
excitement.
We [were up] 2-0 after the first quarter,
gettingastroketaken againstus. We came
back in the second quarter, slotting three
goals away to come to halftime at 3-2.
[But] inthe last quarter, Cambridge
managed to pullawaywiththe win.
Julia says the team comprises ladies
from around South Canterbury, with
playersbased in Geraldine andfrom Fairlie,
Albury, Pleasant Point and Timaru. We
allplay for the enjoymentofthe game and
our teammates. Geraldine has become
stronger in the last two years, making the
finalin2021and winningit, and then into
the final again this year with apretty new
team. We range in age from 16 through
to 30s-40s.
The season has been adifferent one
due to Covidand being very luckytohave
apool of players that we would call on to
make up numbers. We have sat third on
the points table for most of the year. The
semi-finals were against Craighead, who
we hadnt beaten outright all season, so
we came in as the underdogs. But age and
experience are what gave Geraldine the
win in the semi-finals.
Despite the loss, this achievement is a
real positive for Geraldine Combined
Hockey Club. Club president Meg
Catherwood says, Its great that we have
been able to have ateam reach the final
for the past two years. Its acredit to the
work the team hasput in. It will hopefully
attract afew more players towanttoplay
for our club in the senior competition.
Our club has a strong primary
contingent playing a small local
competition. We havethree Year 5-8 teams
playing inTimaru. At the moment, our
weak area is at the Year 9-13 level, where
we havent hadenoughplayerstoform a
team. Local players have joined Roncalli
College teams to continue their hockey.
Wed like to think that when the new turf
facility opens, itwill raise the profile of
hockey in the community, and we will
draw some more players from all age
groups to become involved with the club
and so be able to offer teams at all levels
again.
Julia adds, Geraldine, over the last
three years, has gone through ahuge
culture change, and that has made the
game moreenjoyablefor players.Weplay
avery good passing game where every
player is avalued team member.
We want to give ahuge thank you to
ournew coachfor 2022,Wendy Guthrie.
Also, for the support the team gets from
theGeraldine CombinedHockey committee
and special thanks to our sponsors
Barwoods, Thompson Construction and
Engineering, and Andrew Sullivan Brick
