Laurenwon the emerging talentaward, Rogerwon agronomist of the year and Hamish small seed growerofthe year. It wasthe first combinedNew Zealand Arable Awards with 80 nomineesvyingfor nine awards. For the Arable Farmer of the Year title, Leestonfarmer David Birkettwon, going up against Federated Farmers’ Southland presidentChris Dillon,and former national vicepresident Karen Williams and husband Mick. David, aleader in environmental and sustainable farming, was praisedfor his focus on improving soil quality. He was singled out for being open to trialling any approachtoreduce synthetic inputs, suchasbiologicalproducts,cover crops and retaining straw, andbeing willingtosharehis knowledgeand results —bothgood andbad. The Williams’won the Environment & Sustainability Award. The Innovation title went to Auld Farm DistilleryownersRob and Toni Auld, of Southland, who make arange of three gins fromabase alcoholofoat,wheat and barley. And is still being addressed. Newminimum flow limits from July1,2023 are set to keepmore water in the river and protect the natural character and mauri of the river. It’s all part of newrules required by the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan (LWRP). Environment Canterbury regionalplanningmanager AndrewParrishsaid consent holderwellbeing hasbeen paramount in the review process. ‘‘Thelast twoyearshave been toughonsome members of the community, with factors such as flooding, Covid19, and Mycoplasmabovis to consider. ‘‘We’ve beenabletoprovide landowners with time to work through the implications of the 2023 minimumflowsfor their farmsand secure alternative watersupplies where needed and available.’’ ECan is working closely with consent holderswithin the catchmenttoimplement the new rules through resource consent reviewsand is assistingaffected landowners to explore their watersupply options and reduce the water theytakeattimesoflower riverflows. At the endofJuly, 71 of 88 consentreviews had been resolved;62now havethe minimumflow applied. There are 17 reviews remaining,held by eight consent holders. Three reviewswerepublicly notified in July, with hearings likely to be later in the year. The actual benefits of the consentreviewwill notlikely be seenuntilthe irrigation season is under way at the end of 2023,MrParrishsaid. IN BRIEF NEW DIRECTORS <strong>Ashburton</strong> businessman and experienced director John Rodwell has been appointedtothe board of New Zealand wool scourer, WoolWorks. CHALLENGE ON Taylor Bird, of Hakatere Station, has one of the dog teamsfrom Australia and New Zealand competing in the <strong>2022</strong> Cobber Challenge Relay. The three week challenge gotunder way this weekandwill see dog teams wearGPS collarstotrack how far, fast and hard they work. Teamsizes rangefrom two to four dogs, with the new relay format designed to show off theteam effort that goes into farm work -between farmers and multiple dogs.Cobber’s marketing manager KellieSavage said the relay was aboutrecognising the contribution of working dog teamson Aussie and New Zealandfarms. ‘‘As farmers usually work with ateam of dogs,we wanted to showcase their incredible teamwork.’’ People can follow the performance on the Cobber Dog Facebookpage.
