State of the City By Mayor Shelly Petrolia Fall News, Events, and Equal Opportunities in our City Honoring Delray Beach Civil Rights Icon Yvonne Lee Odom Last month, the City Commission honored the legacy of local civil rights icon, Yvonne Lee Odom, by proclaiming August 8th as “Back to School Day” in our city, in recognition of her work to end segregation in public schools. Her journey as a trailblazer started when she was a high school student. On September 28, 1961, then 15-year-old Odom became the first Black student to walk through the doors of Seacrest High School in Delray Beach. The “Back to School Day” proclamation in her honor seeks to continue Odom’s work by encouraging all residents, schools, businesses, and community organizations to join in recognizing the need for safe, equitable, and inclusive educational opportunities for students. Odom is truly a pillar in our community, having served as a teacher for 45 years and as a community activist. She is also the grandmother of tennis pro Coco Gauff.
