September 24, 1957
• President Eisenhower ordered
the National Guard to help enforce the
racial integration of schools in Little Rock,
Arkansas.
September 25, 1690, and 1789
• The first American newspaper was
published. However, British officials considered
the newspaper offensive and ordered its immediate
suppression.
• The First US Congress proposed 12 Amendments to the
Constitution, of which ten were ratified, forming the Bill of Rights.
September 26, 1960
• The first-ever televised presidential debate occurred between
Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Those who watched the debate
thought Kennedy did better while those that listened thought
Nixon won.

• The US Congress created
the United States Army, initially
consisting of 1,000 enlisted men
and officers.

September 30, 1938
• British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned to
England after meeting with Adolf Hitler and proclaimed, “peace
in our time.” Chamberlain claimed the agreement meant peace;
however, Hitler would go beyond the bounds of the agreement and
would later invade Poland as well as Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain
would resign in disgrace a year later.
