Looking back at important dates that took<br />

place in the month of <strong>September</strong> both here<br />

in America and across the globe.<br />

<strong>September</strong> 1, 1939<br />

• At 5:30am Hitler’s armies invaded Poland, starting World War<br />

II in Europe.<br />

<strong>September</strong> 2, 1666, 1945, and 1962<br />

• The Great Fire of London began in a bakery in Pudding Lane.<br />

In the ensuing three days over 13,000 houses were destroyed,<br />

although only 6 people were thought to have lost their lives.<br />

• President Truman declared victory over Japan Day, commemorating<br />

the formal Japanese surrender in World War II.<br />

• The Soviet Union agreed to send arms to Cuba, which would<br />

eventually lead to the October Missile Crisis.<br />

<strong>September</strong> 3, 1783,<br />

and 1943<br />

• The Treaty of Paris, which formally<br />

ended the American Revolutionary<br />

War, was signed by John Adams, Ben<br />

Franklin, and John Jay.<br />

• Italy signs an armistice with the<br />

Allies during World War II following the<br />

invasion of the Italian mainland.<br />

<strong>September</strong> 4, 1886<br />

• The last large-scale US-Indian war came to an end following<br />

the capture of Geronimo. He would die of natural causes over 20<br />

years later.
