September 11, 2001
• The worst terrorist attack in US history occurred when 4 large
passenger jets were hijacked and then crashed into buildings,
killing nearly 3,000 people. Both Twin Towers would fall, and the
Pentagon would receive serious damage while the 4th plane was
retaken by the passengers who were able to crash it into a field.
September 13, 1814
• As the Battle of Fort McHenry took place in Baltimore Harbor
during the War of 1812 it was observed by Francis Scott Key. He
watched the British attack throughout the night, and at dawn still
saw the American flag flying over the fort. This inspired him to pen
the lyrics that would eventually become the national anthem.
September 14, 1975
• Elizabeth Ann Seton becomes
the first American saint.
September 16, 1620,
and 1810
• The Mayflower ship departed
from England, bound for the
Americas with 102 passengers. It
weathered dangerous Atlantic storms
and reached Plymouth on December 26.
• Mexico’s independence from Spain begins as Father Miguel
Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bells and urged locals to take up
arms against the Spanish.
September 17, 1787, and 1862
• Delegates from all 12 US states unanimously agree
to approve the proposed US Constitution.
• The bloodiest day in US military history occurred as General
Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army was stopped at Antietam
by General McClellan and a numerically superior Union force. By
the time night fell 26,000 men were dead, wounded, or missing.
September 20, 1873
• The New York Stock Exchange was forced to close for the first
time in its history as a result of the banking crisis during the Panic
of 1873.
