<strong>September</strong> 11, 2001<br />
• The worst terrorist attack in US history occurred when 4 large<br />
passenger jets were hijacked and then crashed into buildings,<br />
killing nearly 3,000 people. Both Twin Towers would fall, and the<br />
Pentagon would receive serious damage while the 4th plane was<br />
retaken by the passengers who were able to crash it into a field.<br />
<strong>September</strong> 13, 1814<br />
• As the Battle of Fort McHenry took place in Baltimore Harbor<br />
during the War of 1812 it was observed by Francis Scott Key. He<br />
watched the British attack throughout the night, and at dawn still<br />
saw the American flag flying over the fort. This inspired him to pen<br />
the lyrics that would eventually become the national anthem.<br />

• Elizabeth Ann Seton becomes<br />
the first American saint.<br />
<strong>September</strong> 16, 1620,<br />
and 1810<br />
• The Mayflower ship departed<br />
from England, bound for the<br />
Americas with 102 passengers. It<br />
weathered dangerous <strong>Atlantic</strong> storms<br />
and reached Plymouth on December 26.<br />
• Mexico’s independence from Spain begins as Father Miguel<br />
Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bells and urged locals to take up<br />
arms against the Spanish.<br />
<strong>September</strong> 17, 1787, and 1862<br />
• Delegates from all 12 US states unanimously agree<br />
to approve the proposed US Constitution.<br />
• The bloodiest day in US military history occurred as General<br />
Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army was stopped at Antietam<br />
by General McClellan and a numerically superior Union force. By<br />
the time night fell 26,000 men were dead, wounded, or missing.<br />
<strong>September</strong> 20, 1873<br />
• The New York Stock Exchange was forced to close for the first<br />
time in its history as a result of the banking crisis during the Panic<br />
of 1873.<br />
