Food is Medicine
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Hey kids, you’ve heard the adage “you are what
you eat”? This is also true for the food we eat
as your food is only
as good as what it ate - whether it’s fruit
and veggies or beef, chicken, or fish. What
were they fed?
The bottom line? Food is medicine!
The notion that food can be a potent
medicine dates back centuries, with
ancient cultures recognizing the healing
properties of certain foods. In recent
times, scientific research has provided
a deeper understanding of how specific
nutrients and compounds in food can
influence our bodies at the molecular level.
Take inflammation, for instance – a root cause of numerous chronic
diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Certain foods like
berries, fatty fish, and leafy greens are rich in antioxidants and antiinflammatory
compounds that can help mitigate this bodily response.
By emphasizing fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and sprouted
grains while replacing table salt with Celtic Sea Salt and eliminating
processed foods, this diet has shown remarkable efficacy in lowering
blood pressure levels without the need for medication.
Complex carbohydrates with a low glycemic index, such as quinoa
and sweet potatoes, can help stabilize blood sugar levels. Cinnamon, a
common spice, has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity.
These dietary adjustments underscore
how food choices can significantly impact
the management of chronic illnesses.
It’s not just about combating ailments
– food can also optimize mental wellbeing.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty
fish like salmon have been linked to
reduced risk of depression and anxiety.
In a world where chronic diseases are
on the rise and health care costs continue
to escalate, realizing that food can be a
powerful form of preventive and supportive medicine is paramount. So,
drop the wheat and dairy, eat pasture raised beef, chicken, and eggs. Eat
wild caught fish like Pacific Salmon.
