A Very Busy Month By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening October is a busy month for “desert gardeners.” It’s the best time of the year to add new additions to your garden since milder daylight temperatures and cooler evenings will encourage better rooting and less plant stress. In addition, the moderate temperatures will allow us more time to work around our gardens without subjecting ourselves to heat or sun stroke! In October, there are five tasks that we should address: Pruning, Adjusting Irrigation, Fertilizing, Mulching, & Planting. This is the month to prune and shape palm trees before colder temperatures arrive. This will allow new and delicate fronds the necessary time to acclimate and become more tolerant to future frost. Roses, and other flowering plants and bushes can be selectively pruned (removing dead branches and spent flowers). Postpone extensive pruning, however, until early December when these plants become dormant. By doing this selective pruning, you will stimulate additional fall flowering. You can also prune unwanted “suckers” from trees and bushes. Remember that deciduous trees should be “heavily” pruned only after the leaves have fallen off. In addition, you can “cleanup” dead and damaged branches on non-deciduous now but wait until December (when dormant) before doing extensive pruning. Adhere to the Water Authority Fall Schedule as well as reducing how long you actually water! Check emitters for damage and your system for leaks to replace or repair. October is the last month this year to fertilize plants. This will help replenish nutrients and strengthen roots. If needed, apply sulfur to the soil to reduce pH levels. This will improve root absorption of needed nutrients. Add chelated iron to the soil if plants have yellowing leaves (chlorosis). Where needed, add rock and/or organic mulch to your landscaping. Organic mulch will keep root systems moist and warm as colder temperatures arrive. Replace rock mulch that may have washed away to prevent further soil erosion. Gardening centers will have their new deliveries of plants, bushes and trees. Take time to replace any plants that have been lost during our extremely hot summer or to improve and upgrade your existing landscaping. Except for palm trees, anything can be planted now. No Rest for the Weary By: Stu Cooper / Happy Adventures There is just no rest for the weary. And I really did need a vacation from my recent vacation in Europe on the very port intensive UK/Ireland/ France cruise. Ten ports in twelve days can keep one very busy. Loved every minute of it but a much more sedate cruise itinerary is what I need next. While our next few Vegas Voyager trips are not as “busy” as my last cruise, I (we) will be busy getting our next trips ready to go. And our next Vegas Voyager Bus to the Boat cruises are a bit more relaxed. Relaxed but very well received! Our January 6 – 13, seven night Mexican Riviera cruise on the Discovery Princess is just about sold out. We have close to 150 “Voyagers” (three bus full) participating. As usual, I have the great pleasure of hosting our Vegas Voyagers. Contact Sharon or yours truly if interested to see if there is any last minute availability. Our March 9 -16 Coastal California cruise (also on the Discovery Princess) featuring the FOLK LEGACY TRIO is also proving extremely popular. We are approaching 80 passengers booked with good space still available. If cruising and folk music is your thing, than this cruise is definitely for you. The FOLK LEGACY TRIO will be doing “private group only” shows just for our group. And for those really ambitious, take a look at our 32 night South Pacific, Tahiti and Hawaii round trip cruise from Los Angeles. That group is already approaching twenty and should be a lot of fun. As 2024 progresses we are looking at announcing other trips as well. Be on the lookout for a fifteen night Hawaiian Island cruise, a Viking River cruise (in central Europe) and a <strong>10</strong> night Israel, Holy Land tour. There will be many opportunities for Vegas Voyager Travel members coming up next year. More info to follow but as always, call us anytime. * Vegas Voyager Meetings: I am happy to announce our upcoming Vegas Voyager Travel Club meetings. Our 1st meeting will be Sunday November 5 th at the Sun City McDonald Ranch Community Center at 11:00 am. Our 2nd meeting will be Monday November 6 th at Sun City Summerlin Desert Vista Community Center, also at 11:00 am. We will be discussing upcoming trips and there will be a special presentation by a representative from Viking River and Cruise Line. 39
