The Fernside couple, who own Woolstone Park Lowlines Stud, have been awarded honorary life membership of the Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA). The award is in recognition of Kay and Philip’s meritorious service to the association and the Lowline breed in Australasia. Philip has been aboard member of the association for the past 10 years. The couple, both former media industry professionals, started their farming careers later in life. They began on asmall property in Balcairn, then moved to alarger 100hectare site at Fernside. Philip says he wasn’t asheep farmer. He and Kay preferred goats, initially farming over 500 Angoras for their mohair. When the local irrigation scheme came on tap in the late 1990s, the couple decided to move into cattle farming with a couple of key provisos set down by Kay. ‘‘The cattle had to have no horns, be nicely mannered and not daunting to work with,’’ Philip says. More used to researching stories for newspapers, Philip hit the books and found suitable cattle breeds based on Kay’s requirements. ‘‘The Lowline breed are heritage Angus cattle and they fitted perfectly.’’ He says they are asmallersized breed of cattle and are very easy to work with. ‘‘I found the Australians had been researching the breed. ‘‘They set up the first DNA profiles of a cattle breed and were looking closely at its suitability to allow farmers to run more of the smallersized stock units on hardier paddocks up in the north of the country, compared to larger breeds.’’ He says the benefits of the smallersized animal are shorter gestation periods while getting the same amount of good meat, and they are much easier to handle. When the Australian research, which proved the worth of the breed, was over, breeders elected to keep all the documentation and set up ALCA to foster interest in the breed. The couple bought two Lowline embryos in 1999, and from that bred a couple of bulls, which were then mated to heifers —the rest is history. Today Woolstone Park has 114 registered stud Lowline cattle —about onesixth of the total number of 620 registered Lowline cattle in New Zealand. Philip and Kay have added another element to their business, expanding their passion for the breed into the education sector. ‘‘We saw high schools in Queensland running herdsperson training on their school farms, and so we started it here.’’ Working closely with Rangiora High School for the past 14 years, the couple have introduced herdsmanship and farm skills to many young town and rural students. ‘‘They love it. We still get students who have left school calling us up and offering to help out at the four shows we attend each year.’’ Cabinet art in Waimak Lot 71Bellgrove FixedPrice $909,500 Jennian Homes Display Centre 138 Kippenberger Avenue Rangiora P 03 741 1436 E canterbury@jennian.co.nz jennian.co.nz Opening Hours Wednesday -Friday 12-4pm Sunday 12-3pm or by appointment Lot 92Bellgrove FixedPrice $955,000 Come andvisit us in ournew Design Centre andlet us help you find yourdream home!
