Now in its second year, it is a monthlong celebration of North Canterbury food, wine and hospitality where eateries serve up the very best local produce to tempt diners tastebuds. Event organiser Kelly Lynch of Enterprise North Canterbury’s MADE NORTH CANTERBURY initiative says the event is an opportunity for diners to head out, support local and try something new. ‘‘The North Course supports our local food and beverage producers as well as our local hospitality providers,’’ Kelly says. ‘‘North Cantabrians love their food, wine and beer and they love to support local, so we’re serving up the chance to do both this November and dine their way around the amazing participating establishments. ‘‘We want to see locals and visitors out there enjoying the spring weather, trying new places to dine and tasting delicious new menu items.’’ To date, there are 28 hospitality providers signed up in Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. Each is required to add adish to their menu that must contain at least one ingredient from North Canterbury, and match it, where possible, with aNorth Canterbury wine, beer or coffee. Review called for on audits By DAVID HILL, Local Democracy Reporter North Canterbury’s three councils have called for a review of the way Audit New Zealand conducts its auditing of councils. All three councils have faced hikes in their audit fees and Hurunui District Council chief executive Hamish Dobbie has questioned the scope of the audits and whether it provides value for ratepayers’ money. ‘‘It is important that it is independent, but there is a level of detail, such as Department of Internal Affairs performance measures, which add no value whatsoever for our community.’’ He said the Hurunui District Council faced the same level of auditing as Auckland Council. ‘‘They (Audit NZ) have standards they apply which are not always proportionate. ‘‘And of course, we get audited to amuch higher level and have greater transparency that the Government doesn't have, and it all costs money, which falls on our ratepayers. ‘‘This is another one of those unfunded mandates.’’ Mr Dobbie’s comments followed concerns raised by Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle, after the Kaikōura District Council was initially given an audit bill of $188,730 a whopping 47 percent hike on last year. It was subsequently negotiated down to $137,000. Mr Mackle called on the Office of the Auditor General to review how the auditing process is managed and the impacts on smaller,rural councils. Waimakariri District Council chief executive Jeff Millward said auditing fees had been discussed by the Canterbury Mayoral Forum, and the chief executives’ and finance managers’ forums. ‘‘We have challenged the auditors’ reports and asked the Office of the AuditorGeneral to consider whether the scope of work is at the right level or whether it is over the top.’’ Mr Millward said Waimakariri’s audit fee went up 28% this year and he anticipated ahike of more than 20% next year.
