Heather An m O C Pet McA timb Tania Indep opera New agility park started By JOHN COSGROVE Work has started on the new dog agility park at the Millton Reserve Dog Park in Rangiora. Rangiora Lions Club member and coordinator of the project, Quentin de Hamel, says the installation of wooden zig zags, jumps, raised walkways and hoops will be the accumulation of years of quiet planning by the Rangiora Lions Club. ‘‘The agility stations are part of alonger plan to add additional features to the park that will make the Rangiora Dog park the envy of any community. ‘‘Lions is all about giving back to the community, and these sorts of projects allows us to provide facilities that many members of the community can enjoy. It’s very rewarding’’, says Mr de Hamel. He says the plan is to have the area next to the existing dog park, open to the public before Christmas so dogs can enjoy some new features in the park over the summer months. Mr de Hamel says the opportunity to expand the facilities at Millton Park arose in 2021 when the Waimakariri District Council were looking for ways to use the land behind the existing dog park on River Road. ‘‘As aresult, the council agreed to allocate additional land for the dog park to enable an agility area to be established, and to give dogs greater opportunities for enrichment.’’ In the future it is intended to construct awalking path from the dog parks to the tracks and trails Under way. .. The Rangiora Lions Club raised the funds for the agility features from sponsorship and community grants. Amajor sponsor has been Rangiora Vet Centre. The work is all being done by voluntary labour and the Lions Club welcomes anyone who would like to assist to join them. ‘‘This is acommunity project and we are keen to have the community involved in this development’’, says Mr de Hamel. The error is regretted. Cust stopbank Repair work has started on the Cust River stopbank at the bridge end of Bridge Road, Fernside. Environment Canterbury (ECan) began work acouple of weeks ago after aroutine check found the headwall, aconcrete base wall built at the outlet of adrainpipe or culvert, had collapsed. It was blocking the floodgate and flooding the land and drain upstream, David Aires, ECan's rivers manager, says. ‘‘Left unrepaired, this would create arisk to properties on the landward side of the stopbank, as the floodgate was no longer functional.’’ On the landward side of the stopbank, the inlet of the culvert was blocked with rubbish and the bank had slumped further restricting flow into the Cust River. Anew alloy floodgate will be fitted to improve the flow capacity of the culvert and increase its ability to control floodwaters. Aweed grill on the landward headwall will also be installed to prevent weed build up inside the culvert, lowering the chance of blockages.
