Boost for wetland
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
AKaikōura wetland project will
receive afunding boost to help with
restoration work.
The Kaikōura Zone Committee has
recommended agrant of $6160 be
made to aproject to restorethe
Tirohanga Wetland, acoastal
wetland to the north of Kaikōura.
The funding would come from the
zone committee’s $75,000 2023/24
action plan budget, if approved by
Environment Canterbury.
It would pay for fencing to protect
the wetland from livestock,
filtration of runoff and weed
control.
In the funding application
presented to last month’s zone
committee meeting, Environment
Canterburysenior biodiversity
advisor Heath Melville said the
weeds included black alders and
willow, which were becoming apest
in the wetland.
He said the landowner would be
contributing $6630 to the project.
The project has previously
received the Immediate Steps
funding from Environment
Canterburyin2021, following the
2016 North Canterbury earthquake,
for native planting and tackling
weeds.
