Eyrewell firm wins Technology Award
Angus Robertson Mechanical Ltd was awarded the Misco Joinery
Technology Award at the recent North Canterbury Business Awards. A
generational company, it focuses on it’s founder’s strong commitment
toquality, innovation and leading edge technology,specilaising in
producing coil processing and rollforming machines for the roofing and
construction industry. Reporter John Cosgrove talks with General
Manager Clint Taylor.
Based in Eyrewell,this North Canterbury
specialist technologyfirm designs and
manufactures unique building industry
products for its clients nationally and
internationally.
General manager Clint Taylor saysthey
love working closely with customers to
meet their requirements thatvary from
country to country.
‘‘We want to help them optimise their
productivity, maintain cost­efficiency and
operate safely to international standards.’’
The company was founded in1993 by
the late Angus Robertson who set the
baseline for the team of experienced
design and manufacturing engineers.
From its 2000sqm factory site at
Eyrewell, 47 staff design and manufacture
Rollforming and coil processing machines
used by all the building industry’smain
players in the country.
Angus Robertson Mechanical speciality
is Rollforming, a‘dark art’ of metalcraft
that requires exceptional engineering
skills with complex calculations, accurate
design, building,automation and
extensive testing to ensure perfection
every time.
Rollform machinesare usedtoform
onsite metal products used for roofing,
steel frame and purlin construction,
garage doors and other specialist
applications.
‘‘We’ve supplied hundreds of bespoke,
standard industry rollformers and other
coil processing machines to clients
throughoutNew Zealand,Australia,
Vietnam, Algeria, Indonesia, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Thailand and Ghana.’’
Mr Taylor describes rollforming as one
that requires operators to have akeen
understanding of metal and its properties.
‘‘Because our clients work with steel
procured from all around the world, it
comes in many different varieties,
consistencies and blends, which makes it
very tricky to bendorroll uniformly.
‘‘Where we come to the forefront of the
industry is throughour teams dedication
togetting it just right, each time, clients
use our machines.’’
He says many clients come to them
because of their reputation for designing,
building and then maintaining the
intricatemachines they build in the
factory.
‘‘There can be 3000 individual parts we
have to make for each machine and having
all the skilled craftsmen and women on
hand makes our job so much easier.’’
He says their team of engineers also
writethe software, design the control
systems and then once installed, offer
extensive maintainence services for the
life of all their complex machines.
‘‘We get to build for our clients the Rolls
Royce of Rollforming machines. What
ever they want we can make for them.’’
The judges at the Business Awards
picked up on the ‘localness’ of the
business. Mr Taylor says it’s thanks to his
wonderful staff and clients, whose sense of
involvement and drive, has had abig
impact on the business’s success.
