Eyrewell firm wins Technology Award<br />
Angus Robertson Mechanical Ltd was awarded the Misco Joinery<br />
Technology Award at the recent <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> Business Awards. A<br />
generational company, it focuses on it’s founder’s strong commitment<br />
toquality, innovation and leading edge technology,specilaising in<br />
producing coil processing and rollforming machines for the roofing and<br />
construction industry. Reporter John Cosgrove talks with General<br />
Manager Clint Taylor.<br />
Based in Eyrewell,this <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
specialist technologyfirm designs and<br />
manufactures unique building industry<br />
products for its clients nationally and<br />
internationally.<br />
General manager Clint Taylor saysthey<br />
love working closely with customers to<br />
meet their requirements thatvary from<br />
country to country.<br />
‘‘We want to help them optimise their<br />
productivity, maintain costefficiency and<br />
operate safely to international standards.’’<br />
The company was founded in1993 by<br />
the late Angus Robertson who set the<br />
baseline for the team of experienced<br />
design and manufacturing engineers.<br />
From its 2000sqm factory site at<br />
Eyrewell, 47 staff design and manufacture<br />
Rollforming and coil processing machines<br />
used by all the building industry’smain<br />
players in the country.<br />
Angus Robertson Mechanical speciality<br />
is Rollforming, a‘dark art’ of metalcraft<br />
that requires exceptional engineering<br />
skills with complex calculations, accurate<br />
design, building,automation and<br />
extensive testing to ensure perfection<br />
every time.<br />
Rollform machinesare usedtoform<br />
onsite metal products used for roofing,<br />
steel frame and purlin construction,<br />
garage doors and other specialist<br />
applications.<br />
‘‘We’ve supplied hundreds of bespoke,<br />
standard industry rollformers and other<br />
coil processing machines to clients<br />
throughoutNew Zealand,Australia,<br />
Vietnam, Algeria, Indonesia, Malaysia,<br />
Myanmar, Thailand and Ghana.’’<br />
Mr Taylor describes rollforming as one<br />
that requires operators to have akeen<br />
understanding of metal and its properties.<br />
‘‘Because our clients work with steel<br />
procured from all around the world, it<br />
comes in many different varieties,<br />
consistencies and blends, which makes it<br />
very tricky to bendorroll uniformly.<br />
‘‘Where we come to the forefront of the<br />
industry is throughour teams dedication<br />
togetting it just right, each time, clients<br />
use our machines.’’<br />
He says many clients come to them<br />
because of their reputation for designing,<br />
building and then maintaining the<br />
intricatemachines they build in the<br />
factory.<br />
‘‘There can be 3000 individual parts we<br />
have to make for each machine and having<br />
all the skilled craftsmen and women on<br />
hand makes our job so much easier.’’<br />
He says their team of engineers also<br />
writethe software, design the control<br />
systems and then once installed, offer<br />
extensive maintainence services for the<br />
life of all their complex machines.<br />
‘‘We get to build for our clients the Rolls<br />
Royce of Rollforming machines. What<br />
ever they want we can make for them.’’<br />
The judges at the Business Awards<br />
picked up on the ‘localness’ of the<br />
business. Mr Taylor says it’s thanks to his<br />
wonderful staff and clients, whose sense of<br />
involvement and drive, has had abig<br />
impact on the business’s success.<br />
