It was agame that had been programmed eight months earlier but Cyclone Gabrielle, that battered the Hawkes Bay, prevented the team from travelling south. With the match put on the backburner for months, Hawkes Bay finally had their shot at winning back the historic trophy, starting in Rangiora last Friday. It had Canterbury Country on the back foot from the beginning, and Hawkes Bay took the trophy home after Country suffered afirst innings loss. Canterbury Country won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Hawkes Bay amassed 353 in 132 overs. Heading the Country bowling was captain Sam Chamberlain who took 4/57 from 37.5 overs. In reply Canterbury Country wickets fell at regular intervals and the cup defence looked slimmer with each ball bowled. The only sustained resistance came from Cheviot’s Archie Redfern who scored 56. The seasons normal programme will commence shortly with round robin games against other teams in the zone. The winner of this will earn the right to challenge for the Hawke Cup. Scoreboard: Canterbury Country 129 (Archie Redfern 56, Harry Chamberlain 25) lost on the first innings to Hawkes Bay 353 (Sam Chamberlain 4/57, George Gunn 2/56). Rga racegoers support Katie Cox Appeal By SHELLEY TOPP Racegoers at Rangiora Harness Racing Club’s (RHRC)Bayley’s Raceday meeting have added to the Katie Cox Appeal. Acharitable trust was established last month by Craig Wiggins to collect donations for Katie, aged 33, atalented harness racing trainer and driver from Leeston, after she was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form of lung cancer following adoctor'svisit to treat a lingering cough. The campaign was established to help Katie fund her medical expenses including expensive medication which has been used successfully overseas. RHRC president Russell Latimer says buckets were placed around the raceway at last Friday’s meeting for racegoers to support the appeal. Raceday sponsors, Bayleys Canterbury, and their team of real estate agents attending the meeting contributed significantly to the total raised. Racegoers to the next race meeting at Rangiora will also have the opportunity to support the appeal. To date the harness racing community has raised about $300,000. Asuccessful Melbourne Cup day fundraiser luncheon held at Addington Raceway on November 7added significantly to the total, which also includes donations of $25,000 from Entain, $10,000 from TAB NZ and $5000 from Harness Racing New Zealand. Katie has thanked everyone for their support in an open letter to the harness racing community posted on the Harness Racing New Zealand website. ‘‘I am humbled by your generosity and the many kind words. Abig thanks must also go to all those who have helped initiate this,’’ she said.
