I Got It At a Yard Sale
For Only $5
Publisher’s Note: I stumbled upon this
article from 22 years ago where a reader,
Helen Irwin, had suggested that Daytripping
create a list of Town Wide Yard Sales. We
found 34 of them that year and I have to
think that Daytripping and the Facebook/
Townwideyardsale page, created by Carrie
Ann Timm (our Associate Publisher) have
played a hand in what’s become a craze for
many years now. We have around 100 listed
with our events list (see page 47) and Carrie
Ann expects that her site will eventually
have in the neighbourhood of 140. The list
has been one of the most popular featured
in Daytripping since Helen had that good
idea way back in 2001.
Yard sale followers say the most
enjoyable way to spend summer
Saturdays is making short drives between
locations, then rifling through messy lots
of used items. That’s why established,
large, well-organized yard sales are
eagerly anticipated by customers.
The village of Cottam holds an annual
sale day for the entire community.
Yards, garages and businesses display an
unimaginable variety of excellent items.
After being established a few years,
people come regardless of the weather or
other attractions.
This year, 2001, the day dawned on
heavily pouring rain. At eight-fifteen a.m.,
Memory Lane Hairdressing & Gift Shop
was jammed with people who came for
the sale. Women were getting their hair
done while the crowd spilled into the
salon area, but no one minded.
They were lugging off teddy bears,
wrought iron candle sconces, woven
scenic throws, fancy picture frames,
firemen figurines and heaps more.
Everyone was happy.
On the sidewalk, baked goods covered
with plastic were being sold to a crowd of
raincoated patrons, many with umbrellas.
Of course I bought some - where else
can you get genuine homemade pastry?
Not far away, fresh vegetables from local
greenhouses were on sale. Later, rain
over, wares were spread on lawns. It was
a good sale day.
There are thousands of single-home
yard sales every summer, but it takes
volume to attract buyers. A municipal
yard and garage sale takes much
organizing so its not too early to start on
one for next year. Set the date, agree on a
few rules, and be ready to advertise one
or two months ahead.
Patrons want variety - a rocking chair,
kitchen table, baby furnishings, even
a wheelchair. But they may buy a big
heavy milk can. “It isn’t rusted inside.”
We can use is if there’s another “boil
water” warning. “Here’s an old glass milk
bottle turned lightly blue,” and “Hey, look
at this - a Philco radio that still works!”
Unrecognized treasures. Well, maybe.
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure
- that’s what makes yard sales successful.
A yard sale daytrip usually takes one
no more than 50 miles from home,
and rural scenery between villages and
towns usually is beautiful. Take a picnic
lunch. Better, stop at a comfortable little
restaurant along the way.
Yard sales are desirable events for
steadily increasing numbers of people, so
I’d like to see town-wide sales advertised
in Daytripping.
