Amish Friendship Bread
“Friendship takes time and energy
if it’s going to work. You can luck into
something great, but it does not last if
you do not give it proper appreciation.
Friendship can be so comfortable, but
nurture it—don’t take it for granted.”
Betty White
A friend gave me three bags of
Amish Friendship Bread starter. One
was for me and two others to pass on.
Friendship bread—also known as
Amish friendship bread—is the chain
letter of baking. A simple starter is
mixed and then developed for 10 days
at room temperature. The person who
makes the starter, like a sweet version
of a sourdough starter, keeps some to
bake up a loaf of bread or other baked
items, then they divide the rest to pass
on to friends. If a little of the starter is
kept, it can become the basis of a new
batch of starter.
Legend has it that when Amish
people were poor, sick, or otherwise
unable to care for themselves, bakers in
the community would make sourdough
bread to give them. Throughout the
years the tradition has changed, and
By Nancy McSloy, London
the friendship starter is passed on to
everyone throughout the community.
I thought of how this tradition could
be rooted to our area given our Amish
culture throughout the area.
I love to bake so for me this was
something fun to try. I kept one and
passed the other two on to my sister
and daughter-in-law. Each day for the
first five days I would “squish” the
starter in the Ziploc bag. On day five
it was time to nourish it by adding
milk, sugar, and flour. Again, for the
next five days I nurtured it everyday
by “squishing” the dough (carefully
following my friend’s directions). On
day ten, I once again nourished the
dough and then it was time to prepare
and bake the bread.
The loaf of bread was a masterpiece
in my eyes, and it was devoured
quickly. I had enough of the starter to
do another ten days of “squishing” and
nurturing and once again I had two
more to pass on to friends.
As I have been tending to the dough
daily, I thought of how friendships
need to be nurtured and nourished
to work. As Betty White
says, “Nurture it—don’t
take it for granted.” Had I
have left the Ziploc bag of
starter on the counter and
not tended to it, I would
have had a bag of one
cup of starter at the end
of the 10 days. Instead,
by nurturing, it grew into
a delectable loaf of Amish
Friendship Bread.
