The other guy, figuring this was worth looking into, asked, "Why are you throwing those nails away?" The first guy explained, "If I pull a nail out of my pouch and it's pointed towards me, I throw it away cause it's defective. If it's pointed toward the house, then I nail it into the siding." The second guy was outraged. He yelled, "You idiot! The nails pointed towards you aren't defective! They're for the other side of the house!" Newspapers By Jacoba Bos - From Daytripping November-December 2009 For most of us, newspapers have been an integral part of our life ever since we realized that paperboys dropped them on front porches and fathers snoozed behind them while siblings fought over the comics. The newspaper industry has a long and illustrious history going back to A.D. 500 when the first issue saw the light on a carved block of wood as a as a court journal. It was devoured by its mostly royal subscribers who, like the rest of us, were curious to find out what was going on in their (by our standards) small world. About 1,200 years later an enterprising woman name Elisabeth Mallett took it upon herself to keep the British informed, so she founded the London Daily Courant in 1702. Throughout the centuries, newspapers have informed and educated, entertained and influenced their readers. And over the years the free press has given a voice to people from every walk of life who regard this institution as solid as the banks that advertised in them. Yet the voice of this age-old institution is not immune to the traffic roar of the information highway with the internet dispensing information and entertainment on lit-up screens that strain the eyes and boggle the mind. This is a far cry from having a relaxing coffee break with the paper. It seems the only human touch of the computer is that it can catch a virus. I find it difficult to believe something as impersonal as the internet could possibly replace newspapers. The printed press provides me with a window on the world, giving background information on current events and personalities in the news. I can absorb this information at my own speed and go back to the printed page at my convenience. Besides bringing its readers world and area news, there are often recipes, advice columns and reports on events going on in the area. For the area businesses, the printed press is a valuable advertising avenue. And for post war immigrants, newspapers were, along with the Bible and the Eaton’s catalogue the three top sources for learning the English language. The possibility of newsprint becoming obsolete also leaves me wondering about such things as: How can a person hide behind a computer at the breakfast table and how can you swat a pesky fly with a computer mouse? How can I clean paint brushes and wipe windows and mirrors to a glossy shine without a wad of newsprint? How will I keep casseroles hot while en route to an ill friend or new mom without the insulating qualities of newsprint. To keep my tomato plants from wilting before they get to my daughter’s garden, I’ve always relied on layers of wet newspapers which kept them fresh long enough to travel past Toronto in rush hour traffic. Can the internet beat that? And I’d like to know how my husband can clean his catch of fish on a campsite picnic table without layers of newspapers to prevent the little ones from falling through the cracks. Newspapers are still an indispensable part of our life and a trusted media that educates, informs and entertains the readers. I for one look forward to a relaxing break with the paper, reading about people, places to visit, and to learn about the history of our great country. Neighbourly advice and recipes plus puzzles to are among my favourite reading. And I’m glad this “Biggest Little Paper in Canada” contains all of the above and more.
