The
Missing
Money
Here’s a little
brain test that
should drive you
insane if you
spend enough
time on it...
Three men
walk in to a
hotel to get a
room for the night.
The bellboy tells them the
rooms are $30/night. They agree to
share one room and each pay $10.
$10x3=$30.
After they are shown to their
rooms, the manager comes out to
the desk and asks what's going on.
The bellboy tells him that he just
rented a room to 3 guys for $30.
The manager tells the bellboy that
was wrong to do because it is a
holiday and the rates are
discounted. The room is only $25.
So he tells the bell boy to take $5
back to the three guys. The bell
boy takes $5 from the register and
heads up to the guys' room to give
it to them, but, being sneaky, he
realizes that the guys don't know
that the room is $25. As far as they
knew it's $30.
But he realizes he should give
them something, and decided to
give them $3 dollars back and keep
the other $2 for himself, $3+$2=$5.
He figures the guys will never
know. So he knocks on the door of
their room and gives each guy $1
back. Now, each guy has paid $9.
(They each paid $10 initially, then
got a dollar back). So the question
is: If each guy paid $9 dollars for
the room for the total of $27
dollars, and that sneak bell boy
kept $2, what happened to the
other dollar? $27+$2=$29... As you
know, the story started with $30.
