2318 Aveling & Porter Class A8 8nhp General Purpose Estate Engine ‘Big Ben’ Works No. 3387. Reg No. HKJ 817. Built 1894 . Double Crank Compound. Two speed.Four shaft. Aveling and Porter were best known for their steam rollers; they did however produce a good number of traction engines and road locomotives particularly in the late part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is probably true to say that Avelings had a bigger share of the road engine market than any other in the Victorian era; it was only at the turn of the twentieth century that Fowlers, Burrells and McLarens overtook them in this sector. No.3387 is an early example of their later design 8 NHP traction engines using the overhead (Fowler design) compound cylinder arrangement with bores 6.5”x10.5” with a 12” stroke. The Class A8 engine left the Rochester works in July 1894 and was exhibited at the Highland Show in Aberdeen that same year. This imposing four shaft general purpose engine was spotted and bought by Lord Tweedmouth and delivered to his estate at Guisachan, Inverneshire on the 8th August 1894. After a couple of years it passed to another peer of the realm, Lord Northbourne and put to work on his estate at Betteshanger, Kent from 1896 until the mid 1920s, when it passed to the Kent firm of Wingham Engineering Co Ltd. At around this time it received its registration number HKJ 817. From 1948, it resided with the well known Kentish steam operators Pegden Bros of Elham. By the early 1960s, the engine had been sold into preservation to Stephen Hubbock of Petersfield, Hampshire (a name for many years closely associated with the Great Dorset Steam Fair). In the mid 1960s it went to H.S. Pocock of East Preston, West Sussex, who kept it for ten years or so before going to C. Russett of Southampton, who christened it, appropriately, “Big Ben”. The Corbin family from Corfe Mullen, Dorset were the owners from 1978 until 1986 and after a brief spell in the hands of Swiss enthusiast Retonio Breiten Mozer, passed to John Lee of Sandy Bay in 1988. During these years in preservation, there has been an ongoing process of restoration, including the fitting of a new boiler Barrel in the 1960s, resulting in a well presented, mechanically sound machine with a current boiler certificate. With its 6’ 6” rear and large front wheels, “Big Ben” stands well and has the handsome proportions of a road engine.
