2319 Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies 6 NHP General Purpose Light Agricultural Engine
Built 1908
Works No.20760
Reg No. 2891 UR
Single Cylinder Two Speed
No.20760 was sent away from Orwell Works, Ipswich on 4th December 1908 and sold to Mr Powell for use on his estate at
Speldhurst near Tunbridge Wells, Kent. From 1909 until 1949 the engine spent its working life principally on estate woodland,
hauling timber and powering a sawbench. An early photograph exists of the engine on the road near Speldhurst.
In 1949 the engine was retired and taken by Chris Lambert of Horsmonden, then sold to Howard Hull of Hammer Mill, Biddenham. In
1954 it returned to Chris’ yard at Horsmonden and shortly after his death went back to Ransomes’ Orwell Works in June 1955. Here it
was superficially restored and painted in “exhibition” colours for display in the works museum.
After less than four years, however, the museum was disbanded and Ransomes’ Register of Engines (now at the Institute of
Agricultural History, Reading University) records “as per H.H.D’s memo 12th July 1960, this 6 NHP Traction given to Mr J Crawley,
National Traction Engine Club”. Thereafter the engine passed through several hands before being purchased by the present owner in
1977. At that time, the engine had no name, so she was called “Jubilee” in recognition of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Silver
Jubilee in that year. Since then “Jubilee” has driven to most rallies under her own steam, including five times from Buckinghamshire to
the Great Dorset Steam Fair without any mishaps - a testament to her fine mechanical condition and roadworthiness. In the thirty year
period of ownership, extensive renovation has taken place, which has included : 1982 new cast chimney saddle; 1983 fitting Avon
solid rubber tyres; 1987 new firebox with solid foundation ring in place of the former Z ring, new rear casing plate, new tubes and
front tubeplate; 1995 repainted in original black livery discovered below overlapping boiler cladding, with “exhibition” blue lining;
2000 new smokebox and chimney with stainless liner, steel brake band with Ferodo lining pads; 2002 new slide valve, big end re
bushed; 2007 new crankshaft bearings; 2010 boiler refurbishment and new firetubes. The boiler successfully passed its hydraulic test
and comes with a current boiler certificate valid until 8th October 2012.
Estimate £120,000 - £130,000
