24 BRITAIN AND IRELAND
St. John’s College, Cambridge University
From the rolling hills and sweeping dales of County Cork to the
buzzing cobblestone streets of London, you’ll feel right at home
during a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These
strongholds of history are raw and beautiful, regal and bursting
with life. They’re an unforgettable holiday destination.
England
From the undulating hills of Oxfordshire to Stratford-upon-
Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, England is beauty
and history combined. It’s also the perfect destination for
adventure and activity, whether you’re cycling in Norfolk,
surfing off Newquay or rock climbing in the Peak District.
London, England’s capital, is a melting pot of people and
has some of the richest culture in Europe. Visit the Tower
of London, wander along the Thames, marvel at Big Ben,
take a black cab or a red double decker bus ride – all
quintessential British experiences. Be sure, too, to make it
out of London’s gates and relax with the locals in a country
pub, enjoy a balmy summer’s day music festival or watch a
cricket match, the nation’s offical pastime.
Scotland
Great things come in small packages and Scotland certainly
has many treasures. For the history buff, visit Edinburgh
and Glasgow; for the hungry, try haggis, Angus beef or
smoked salmon; or, for the thirsty, sample the nation’s
malt whiskies. There are cold, glittering seas washing
against the Outer Hebrides and untamed mountain scenery
of the Highlands & Northern Islands. Wildlife watchers
should look for otters, eagles, whales and dolphins,
while hill walkers can tackle almost 300 peaks.
There’s turbulent history, castles and country pubs,
canoeing and caber-tossing, golfing and fishing and
all-round good craic (lively conversation).
Wales
Britain and
Ireland
The Welsh spirit is the country’s defining feature
and it’s evident everywhere, from its art and films to
rollicking traditional music and non-stop live rock scene.
Wales is also supremely beautiful; magnificent cities,
sweeping mountains and dramatic coastlines. Seek out
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and walk its winding
trails past pounding surf, windswept beaches and plunging
limestone cliffs. Cosmopolitan Cardiff, the Welsh capital,
is a mix of eccentric castle, dynamic waterfront and
unmissable St. Fagans National History Museum. It’s also
a hotspot for nightlife and patriotic sporting events.
Visit Wales and tour villages with tongue-twisting names
before settling down in a cosy pub with a pint of local ale,
or join adrenaline junkies in a quest for the ultimate
white-knuckle adventure.
