Take a vaporetto over to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and climb the bell tower for the best view over the city. If there’s time, take the opportunity for a gondola ride to see Venice from the waterways. Day 3: Modena Stock up on the region’s famous balsamic vinegar at an acetaia, a house where the dressing is made in the attic. Don’t leave town without feasting on Modena’s specialities of prosciutto, tortellini and zampone – stuffed pig’s trotter! Day 4-5: Cinque Terre Enjoy sweeping views across the Mediterranean from this picturesque coastal path. Walk or catch a train between the five towns and be sure to indulge in Liguria’s famous pesto. Day 6-7: Pisa - Florence After marvelling at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, appreciate art treasures in Tuscany’s romantic capital and walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo to see the city at dusk. Day 8-9: Perugia - Spello Beautifully preserved Perugia is a great base for exploring Umbria. Take a day trip to nearby Spello to sample local wines and food at a quaint enoteca. Inspect art inside the legendary Museo del Prado, seek out a bargain in the narrow streets around Puerta del Sol or snack on tapas in Plaza Mayor. Perhaps experience old-world Spain on a day trip to the medieval city of Toledo, join the Madrilenos in Malasana for a glass or two of sherry or head to the Gran Via hotspots to dance the night away. Day 3: Cordoba Discover the mesh of Muslim, Jewish and Christian cultures in the architecture and cuisine of this southern city. Perhaps visit the Mezquita with its golden arches and intricate columns, or take a stroll through the maze of the old quarter with its cobbled lanes, pleasant squares and riots of potted colour. Day 4-5: Seville Be swept up in the emotion of a fiery flamenco performance. See the world’s largest Gothic cathedral and its imposing Moorish tower, or enjoy the tranquil gardens in the Parque de Maria Luisa. This is the tapas capital, so feast on tasty morsels before a twilight wander through El Centro. Day 6-7: Costa de la Luz Travel to the ‘Coast of Light’ and enjoy an optional day trip across the border to the British territory of Gibraltar, home to the famous Rock of Gibraltar, or go one step further to Tangier in Morocco. There is also plenty of time to visit the sandy beaches of Tarifa for sun and surf. Later, work off lunch with a wander through the remnants of Pompeii and perhaps ascend the slopes of nearby Vesuvius. Spend evenings in the seaside town of Sorrento. Day 13-15: Rome Perhaps visit the Vatican City to see St Peter’s Basillica, then indulge with a final Italian feast. Day 10-11: Granada There’s time to explore the old Arab quarter of Albayzin, with its maze of alleyways and sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada. For the best spot at sunset, head to the Mirador de San Nicolas at the very top of the city’s steep streets. A visit to the exceptional Alhambra – a red fortress overlooking the city of Granada – is a must. Day 12-13: Valencia Spain’s third-largest city offers plenty to see and do. Make a stop at the morning market for a breakfast of tortillas or churros, then visit the cathedral which allegedly houses the Holy Grail. Day 14-15: Barcelona In vibrant Barcelona, take time to visit the Picasso Museum and Gaudi’s eccentric La Sagrada Familia. There’s plenty of time to do a spot of shopping, stroll Las Ramblas or to soak up the relaxed vibe along Barcelona’s waterfront.
