56 IRELAND
Northern Ireland coast
The Emerald Isle delights with its unique traditions, beauty and
personality. Said to be 40 shades of green, the Irish landscape Atlantic Ocean is a jawdropping
extravaganza of mountain, lake, sea and sky. Take a walk
along a beautifully scenic track through county villages of thatched
cottages, or stop off at a welcoming pub that’s filled to overflowing
with lively music, pints of Guinness and warm-hearted locals.
Republic of Ireland
From the picture-postcard harbour villages of County
Cork to the remote wilderness of Donegal and the lively
city of Dublin, Ireland is beautiful. There are countless
opportunities to explore the countryside, whether it’s
hiking the hills of Kerry and Connemara, or surfing the
beach breaks of Bundoran.
In the land of U2 and writer James Joyce, there are cultural
pleasures too. Dublin, Cork and Galway City all have
wonderful restaurants, vibrant pubs and a jumping livemusic
scene, while you can enjoy traditional Irish music in
pubs from Limerick to Doolin and Killarney.
There is a wealth of history to discover, from the countless
medieval castles and early Christian monasteries.
Ireland is also renowned for its traditional handiwork,
including Waterford crystal, Donegal tweeds and
Aran sweaters.
Northern Ireland
From the 17th century city walls of Derry (Londonderry)
to the breathtaking scenery along the Causeway Coast to
Belfast’s glorious Victorian architecture, Northern Ireland
is a beautiful country and easy to explore – it’s just 136
kilometres long and 112 kilometres wide. The nation’s
capital, Belfast, is the product of politics, history and
religion and you’ll see all three reflected in its Victorian
architecture and ever-changing modern skyline. For
natural beauty, visit Northern Ireland’s most popular
attraction, the Giant’s Causeway, along the Causeway
Coast, the mountains of Mourne in County Down and
peaceful Fermanagh’s Lakes.
