People development<br />
Capacity Building Projects (CBP) provide<br />
support for individuals or groups to extend their<br />
experience <strong>and</strong> try something new that is of<br />
considerablevalue to the sugarcane industry.<br />
Funding of up to $5,000 for an individual<br />
or $10,000 for a group is available. There are<br />
no set defi nitions for projects providing they<br />
demonstrate an ability to assist people to learn,<br />
change, or enhance their leadership skills.<br />
During 2010–2011, 14 CBPs were completed,<br />
eight individual projects <strong>and</strong> six group projects.<br />

PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT<br />
Participation at the Soil <strong>and</strong> Water<br />
Conservation Society Conference, Colorado<br />
USA – Peter Wulf, University of Queensl<strong>and</strong><br />
In July 2010, Peter Wulf attended the 61st Soil<br />
<strong>and</strong> Water Conservation Society International<br />
Resource Conservation <strong>and</strong> Environmental<br />
Management Conference in Colorado, USA.<br />
The Conference hosted approximately 1200<br />
delegates predominantly from the United<br />
States <strong>and</strong> Canada with a broad range of topics<br />
including minimum soil tillage, forestry, water<br />
quality issues <strong>and</strong> environmental management<br />
systems in agriculture.<br />
The only Australian representative, Peter<br />
presented two papers relating to his PhD<br />
research, including the institutional arrangements<br />
concerning diffuse l<strong>and</strong> based pollution from<br />
agriculture into the Great Barrier Reef, <strong>and</strong> a<br />
second paper on incentives to achieve improved<br />
water quality in the Douglas Shire in Far North<br />
Queensl<strong>and</strong>. The fi rst presentation has been<br />
published in a leading environmental law journal<br />
<strong>and</strong> the second paper is being fi nalised for<br />
publication (UQ041).<br />
SRDC Executive Director Annette Sugden visited cane<br />
growing regions across Queensl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> New South Wales<br />
throughout the year to heed the issues of growers <strong>and</strong><br />
stakeholders across the industry.<br />
