percent of the heat duty is assumed to be provided by the low <strong>NOx</strong><br />

burner at the hot end of the kiln. The capital costs for<br />

retrofiting the eight model plants described in Table 6-1 in an<br />

existing indirect-fired kiln are given in Table 6-4. Direct<br />

installation, indirect installation, and contingency costs were<br />

assumed to be 45, 33, and 20 percent, respectively, as discussed<br />

in Section 6.1.2. The capital costs of retrofit low <strong>NOx</strong> burners<br />

for the eight model plants ranged <strong>from</strong> $310,000 for the small<br />

long dry kiln to $444,000 for the large long wet kiln. The<br />

capital costs for retrofitting on a wet kiln compare well with<br />

the $500,000 total installed cost estimated by a cement<br />

company.10<br />
