traditional classroom learning environment, as evidenced by their inclusion in at least three of the seven learning environment inventories. The most recently developed instrument measuring student perceptions of the classroom learning environment, the Perceptions of Learning Environments Questionnaire (PLEQ), was published by Clark (1995). This semi-structured inventory containing open-ended questions was developed in response to the author’s perception that the previously cited instruments are limited by scales developed a priori and forced-choice student response options. On the PLEQ, students identify a learning environment and then describe up to 10 behaviors and activities that help as well as hinder their learning. The author tested the instrument with 1249 students at Queensland University of Technology in Australia. The categorized statements and reasons of 100 randomly selected students were analyzed to determine 55 categories of statements and 47 categories of reasons for use in classifying the remaining data. The most frequently identified activities/behaviors that helped students to learn were (a) practical application, (b) clear presentation/explanation, (c) lecturer supports student learning (d) 28
